Beaked Whale

The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

Project Overview:

Learn how to break down more complex objects into simple shapes while creating a Beaked Whale.

Introduction

The Beaked whale is the deepest diving mammal in the sea. They can hold their breath for 2 hours, which allows them to reach 10,000 feet below the ocean's surface.

In this lesson, we will start by warming up our imagination. The following exercise we will simplify the form of a beaked whale. Using your imagination, try to fit the basic shapes in Tinkercad into the form of the whale. For example, a Paraboloid can be used to make the nose/mouth of the whale. Start with the largest shapes, like the body, and move toward the smaller shapes, like the head and tail. Try to use the least amount of shapes you can, but you can add more if you really need to.

Which of these shapes would you use to make the beaked whale?

If you have access to a printer, print a copy of the image below and draw the shapes you see over it.

Instructions

  1. Spend 10-15 minutes to see which of the basic shapes in Tinkercad are in the form of the beaked whale
  2. Continue to the next step.

Simplifying Shapes

There are many different ways to simplify the shape of the whale. Take a few minutes and share your drawings with your classmates. Did you come up with the same combination?

Here is one example of shapes that can be used to make a beaked whale.

See an animation of the shapes!

Now lets move on and make the beaked whale.

Instructions

  1. Continue to the next lesson.

In the next lesson you will learn how to make the head of the whale!
