Battery Tester Magnet Mod (BT-168, BT-168D)

These battery testers are affordable and commonly used. They are handy to have but I find it difficult to test cell batteries because there is a dot at the bottom plate which cause the cell battery to slide around. After trying few fixes, I came up with this easy way.

Supplies

All you need is a rare earth magnet of proper size. The one I used is 1/2" x 1/8" but you can try with different size that you have.

1/2" x 1/8" - $2.10 CAD

Other tools you need:

A screw driver to unscrew the tester.

Unscrew the Tester and Remove the Back Case

First unscrew and remove the back case.

Remove the Plate With the Small Dot

Now remove the plate at the bottom that has the problematic dot which prevents the cell battery from being put still.

Flatten the Dot With a Plier

Now flatten the dot with a plier and then put the plate back.

Install the Magnet

Now just slide the magnet into the gap. You can use something to adjust the magnet location. (piece of small cardboard, foam paper, etc)

Put the Case Back and Screw It.

Now it's time to put the case back and screw it. Just make sure the wire does not get in between the case or they might be damaged when you screw it.

Test With a Cell Battery

Put a cell battery onto the bottom. If you did it correctly, the battery should be attracted onto the plate. If not, just adjust the magnet location.

Final Test

It works and now you have a battery tester which allow you test cell batteries easier. Sometimes you might need to adjust the location of the magnet if the cell keep attracting to wrong place. I used 1/2" magnet and it does not have this problem.
