Basic Single Ended Dread Installation
If you're looking for less bulk or accent pieces in your synthetic dreadlock installation, this is the tutorial for you! Doc is going to take you through installing a single ended synthetic dreadlock step-by-step!
For this tutorial you will need:
- Single Ended Synthetic Dreadlocks
- Elastic Matrix Thread
- Crocodile Clips
- Rat-tailed comb
- Spray water bottle (optional)
Ready? Steady? Go!!!!
Section Off Hair
If you are using elastic thread, cut your thread to an appropriate length (cut a bunch and keep it close by - mine are usually about 16 inches). Using your comb, section off the area for the dread and clip away the rest of your hair to keep it out of the way.
Loop and Position
Pull the natural hair through the loop of your dreadlock and split the natural hair into two strands
Braid
Using the dreadlock and the two natural hair sections, create a three strand braid. Braid until the loose ends can't be tucked into the braid.
Elastic Matrix Thread
Hold your thread at the center bend. Wrap it around three times and tie it in place. (This gives you your initial knot - don't worry, the ends still are sticking out and looking hideous at this point.) Leave one side of the thread with the dread and natural hair and the other side of the thread flying solo. Wrap the free thread down and around the the loose hairs for several turns to lock it all down, wrapping past the natural ends. Knot the thread and cut away the ends. Repeat with remaining sections.
Bask in the Glory of Your Completed Installation
Seriously, you did such a good job. High fives all around!
Remove Installation
To remove:
1. Cut the elastic thread.
2. Gently loosen thread.
3. Unbraid.
4. Comb out and wash the natural hair.
