The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

Project Overview:

This project will show you how to create 3 different buttons using TinkerCAD. While creating your buttons you will learn about the basics of TinkerCAD and 3D printing. After successfully completing this lesson feel free to customize your buttons or create one of your own. Wear your buttons proudly, you made them!

We Need a Plan

In this lesson we will create a basic button that you can 3D print and wear.

Before we get started, we need to consider the features of a button. Buttons have to be able to attach easily to clothes using thread. The other feature we need to consider is size; if our button is too big it will not fit on our clothing. Throughout the steps in this lesson we will design a button that fits both of those requirements.

Getting the Bulk of It

When working on CAD projects its typically easiest to start with your largest shape or feature. In this case our largest feature is the body of the button which is a cylinder.

Instructions

  1. Start by grabbing a cylinder and placing it on the workplane.
  2. Continue to the next step.

Making It the Right Size

During this step we will scale the size of the cylinder to make the perfect button.

Instructions

  1. Scale the cylinder to a height of 2mm.
  2. Adjust the diameter of the cylinder to 16mm
  3. Continue to the next step.
  4. Stuck?

HINT:

You can use the top white dot to adjust the height of the cylinder.

It Isn't Whole Without Holes

To make this button complete we are going to have to put a couple holes in it.

Instructions

  1. Grab another cylinder and add it to the workplane.
  2. Re-size the new cylinder to have a diameter of 3mm.
  3. While having the cylinder selected, select the hole option in the top right corner.
  4. Copy and paste the hole
  5. Move both of the holes into the button as shown.
  6. Select everything on the workplane and press group
  7. Your button is complete!
  8. Stuck?

HINT:

To select all you can press Control + A on a Windows PC or Command + A on a Mac.

In the next lesson you will learn to make a smiley button!
