Baseball Bat

I have made a maple baseball bat that is an exact scale to a real bat, it is made with maple that is glued together. I play baseball so I though it would be cool as a decoration in my room.

Supplies

Tools used.

  1. Radial arm saw
  2. Planer
  3. Jointer
  4. Table saw
  5. Lathe
  6. Miter saw
  7. Band saw
  8. Sand paper

Material used.

  1. Maple
  2. Wood glue

Bat dimensions.

  1. Length- 33 inches
  2. Diameter of barrel- 2 5/8 inch

Cut Wood

Cut 4 pieces of wood a little longer than your desired bat length. (For example, bat length 33 cut wood at 35) Make sure the 4 pieces stacked together is thicker or equal to your barrels diameter. Then use the planer to smooth and flatten each piece of wood.

Glue Wood

Line each piece of wood up and apply glue in between, then use clamps to keep the wood secure for the drying process. Make sure the clamps are tight and enough glue is used.

Post Glue

After the glue is done completely drying it is ready to be sent through the planer. Then you can joint the edges.

Preparing for Lathe

Once jointed it is now ready to square off each end on the miter saw (only a sliver is cut). Then each side is angle cut at 45 degrees on the table saw, this will make the lathe a smoother process. Last step is to mark the center point on each end so you know exactly where to screw the lathe in.

Lathe

Once on the lathe you can now start to spin and chisel the rough wood until a completely smooth surface the diameter of the barrel is achieved. After the barrel is created you can move to the skinny handle, the knob can also be shaped to your liking. Once a desired bat shape is made you can begin sanding on the lathe, start at 80 grit and move up to 150. Once all smooth it is ready to be taken off the lathe and if a part of the knob has to be cut off, it will be done with the band saw. Optional- Wood Oil can be used once the bat is finished to give a better look and bring out the grain.
