Ball Drop Momentum Demonstration
This is a very fascinating way of looking at collisions.
What would happen if a truck hit a car?
What would happen if a bowling ball hits the first cone in the triangle?
Or what would happen if a football player hits a flying ball?
All of these questions can be answered by looking at the objects momentums'.
First of all, lets look at the scenarios
T = Tennis ball
B = Basketball
Supplies
- Basketball
- Tennis ball
- Slow motion camera
Demonstration of T and B Falling Together
As you can see, when both balls fall, both hit the ground at the same time but the basketball rises more because of its mass and stored potential energy.
Demonstration of T Falling on Top of the B
As you can see, they were both falling at the same speed but since the B had more mass and stored potential energy, it pushed the tennis ball to the air further since it transferred its energy to the tennis ball.
Demonstration of B Falling on Top of T
As you saw in the demonstration, both balls were coming down the same speed but the tennis ball was in the bottom which means it will not throw the basketball as much like the other demonstration. The reason is the same. The T does not have enough energy and mass to throw the B.
Demonstration of T Falling on B
As you saw, When the T hit B, it did not bounce as much as the second demonstration. This is because it had only an amount of energy and there was nothing to transfer it more energy so it bounced normally.
Formula for This Demonstration
This formula explains the energy before touching the ground and the energy after touching the ground. As you can see, the after energy is almost doubled.
That is all. I hope I made physics a little bit more fun to you. If you have any questions, you can comment below.
