Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

In a medium sized bowl combine the dry ingredients.

In another bowl combine the wet ingredients, except the apple.

Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry and beat with an electric mixture until combined.

Mix in the apple.

Grease your doughnut pan and pour your batter in, filling each pocket almost to the top but, not quite. About 3/4 of the way full.

Bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely before topping.

Making the Caramel

In a medium sized saucepan over medium-high heat bring all ingredients of the caramel sauce to a boil.

Stir constantly with a wire whisk for about 5 minutes. The sauce will bubble.

The consistency should thicken.

Remove from heat and allow to cool.

It will become thicker as it cools.

Chop half of the package into small chunks.

Place the other half of the package into a food processor and grind into crumbs.

Now for the fun part!

This is a free for all. You can dip the entire doughnut in caramel, or just half, or just the top. I did a variation.

Once the caramel is coated on the doughnut sprinkle with cookie chunks and/ or crumbs.

Enjoy!
