Bacon Wrapped Artichokes: Air Fried, Baked, or Deep Fried
This has traditionally been a thing I've done around Thanksgiving while deep frying turkeys. While the fryer is going and we're all hungry, we've tried wrapping bacon around everything and try cooking it. It's really easy to just throw things in the oil and let them cook for a few minutes.
The artichokes have a mild flavor and they will absorb a lot of the flavor that you put on them. It's fun to experiment with spices and see what you can come up with!
Gather the Supplies:
You'll need a few simple things to make this recipe. It's very simple and takes very little prep time.
- Canned Artichoke Hearts:
- You can buy jars or cans. If you buy cans, the label will say how many are in the can. The fewer listed, the bigger they are and vice versa.
- Bacon:
- Use any style you would like.
- Spices:
- You can use really anything you want.
- The bacon adds salt, so be careful not to add too much.
- I generally use:
- Finely grated parmesean cheese
- A small bit of garlic salt
- Black Pepper
- Wooden Toothpicks:
- The trick is to let them soak in water while you're preparing other ingredients, so they don't burn as much while cooking.
Ingredient Prep
- Drain the artichokes:
- I put them top down in the strainer so the liquid can escape.
- Cut the bacon in half:
- Mix your spices:
- There is no "correct" measurement for the recipe, which makes it easy.
- Put whatever dry spices you think sound good in a bowl.
Put It All Together!
- The artichokes should be a little wet on the outside so the spices can adhere. If not, you can wet them slightly.
- Dredge the hearts in the spices:
- The artichokes are fragile, so be cautious.
- Try to get some of the spices down into the end of the heart without breaking it apart.
- Wrap the bacon around the artichokes as tightly as you can without making a mess of the artichokes.
The Actual Cooking
This part will vary depending upon your cooking method. The goal is to get the bacon to your desired crispness.
These are the times I have used. I generally start with a shorter cooking time and then extend the time to get the bacon to my desired crunch level.
Deep Fry:
- Fry in oil approximately 375 for 3-4 minutes, and keep checking them until desired doneness
Air Fry:
- 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes
Oven Baked:
- 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes
Pull them out and you are ready to eat!
