Backyard Birdhouse With Squirrel Countermeasures and a Feeder in 8 Easy Steps, by Luke Walsh.

Hello my name is Luke Walsh and this is how to make a Backyard Birdhouse with Squirrel Countermeasures and a Feeder in eight easy steps. It is a normal birdhouse that can shelter the native birds in you area. Brining natural diversity to your backyard, and birds that eat the pests and bugs in your yard, while pollinating your plants. This birdhouse has a feeder in the front that can be filled with seed to keep the birds full. This birdhouse also includes a countermeasure that prevents squirrels from jumping onto to the house and either destroying it/tearing it down, or eating the seed intended for the birds. This birdhouse will add a nice touch to your backyard while providing a safe haven to the natural bird species in your area. This is a simple minimum step birdhouse that is easy to construct on your own with common materials that you can purchase from your local hardware store.

- x5, 6in x 6in square piece of wood
- x1 8x8 piece of wood that is 1in deep.
- x1, 3in x 4in piece of wood that is 1in deep
- x1, 2 inch cylinder piece of wood with a 0.5in diameter
- x1, 3in x 4in piece of mesh metal
- x1, 12in long chain
- x1, metal hook with a base that has nail slots. the base should be 1in x 1in and height should be 3in high
- x1, 10in diameter metal cone sloping down that is 4in deep and has a flat top and hollow inside with no physical base at the bottom
- x1 metal clip (attaches to chain) (see the image on step 7)
- x20 nails
- x1 hammer
- x1 Jigsaw
- x1Superglue
- x1Staplegun
Making the Base and Walls

For the first step line one of the 6x6 pieces of wood standing up (these will be your walls), to one of the other 6x6 pieces of wood laying flat (This will be the base) as in the example below. Then repeat with the other 3 other pieces of 6x6 wood until all four sides of the piece laying flat have a piece of wood lined up to them in the same way. Once you have all 4 pieces standing up lined up on the respective sides of the piece laying flat, hammer a nail into each corner connecting the pieces of wood to the flat or base piece. When you Finish this step you should have a base and walls. on your birdhouse.
Making the Roof

Now take The 8x8 Piece of wood and place it on top of the walls and base. It should hang over the edges slightly on each side.Once lined up nail the four corners into the sides to create your roof.
Making the Entrance

Choose one of the birdhouse walls to use as your front. Once you pick one cut out a circle with the jigsaw in the center of the wall hat has a diameter of 2in. This will be the entrance hole for the birds.
Making the Bird Stand

Take the 2in cylinder piece of wood with a diameter of 0.5in. position it 1/2 inch below the Bird hole and in a way so that it will protrude outward from the house. Then superglue the side of the wood that touches the house to it. and let it dry. You now have your bird stand.
Making the Feeder

Take the 3x4 piece of wood. cut out a rectangle inside of it with the jigsaw. The rectangle that you cut out of it should be 2in wide x 3in long. it should go all the way through so there is a hole in the wood. Then take the 3x4 mesh and staple it into the bottom of wood on all corners. Once you have completed this attach the feeder to the front of the birdhouse at the base of it. You will nail the sides into the house to secure it on.
Attaching the Chain.

Take the 1in x 1in hook that is 3in high and nail it into the center of the roof of the house. Then take you chain and attach it to the hook. You now have the place to suspend the birdhouse from.
Adding Squirrel Counter Measure

Take the Clips that attach to the chain and attach them onto it. This will prevent the cone from sliding down the chain into the house. Once these are attached, slide the squirrel countermeasure piece (The 10in diameter metal cone sloping down that is 4in deep and has a flat top and hollow inside with no physical base at the bottom) onto the chain. Gravity will hold the metal cone in place. And whenever a squirrel attempts to jump onto the house it will slide right off the cone protecting it.
Customize

You can paint or draw on any of the wood. Make it your own or add your own design to it. Then find a nice place to hang it. Either nail a hook into a tree and hang it from it, hang it from a stand in your yard or your deck. These eight steps will successfully help you create a simple birdhouse that protects it from squirrels and will brighten up your backyard.
