For my first INSTRUCTABLE project, I will build a scale model of the Bac de Roda Bridge to gain a better understanding of its structural design and how forces are distributed and managed throughout the bridge. This hands-on approach will help me analyze the relationship between form, function, and structural stability in bridge engineering.
This hands-on approach will not only help me visualize and analyze how forces are transferred through the bridge components—such as the deck, pylons, and cable stays—but also allow me to experiment with the real-world application of physics and geometry. I believe that constructing the model step-by-step will reinforce concepts like triangulation, load paths, and structural stability, while also encouraging problem-solving and creativity.
Ultimately, this project will serve as a foundational exercise in architectural modeling and structural analysis, laying the groundwork for more advanced explorations in civil engineering and design.

Ruler

Research and Analyze the Bridge

Before beginning any construction, it's essential to build a solid foundation of understanding about the structure you're modeling. The Bac de Roda Bridge, completed in 1987 and designed by Santiago Calatrava, is a striking example of modern bridge engineering that blends functionality with artistic expression. To accurately replicate it in scale form, start by conducting thorough research and analysis.
Thoroughly analyzing the structure using tools like Google Earth, Google Maps, and Street View to observe it from multiple angles and estimate dimensions such as span length, pylon height, and deck width. Examine its interaction with the surrounding urban environment and inspect key features like pedestrian paths, arches, and cables. Finally, identify and document the main structural components including the asymmetrical arches, tension cables, deck, supports, and railings to guide accurate modeling and scale representation.
Drafting and Cutting Structural Components

Once you’ve gathered reference materials and taken measurements, begin translating your findings into physical components by sketching each major part of the Bac de Roda Bridge on paper. Focus on accurately drawing the road deck, asymmetrical arches, support piers, and base to scale, using your earlier estimates and observations. Take your time to ensure proportional accuracy, as this will directly affect the structural integrity and visual realism of your model. Use a ruler, compass, and templates to maintain precision, especially when drawing curves or repeating patterns. After completing the sketches, carefully cut out each component using a craft knife or precision cutter, working on a safe cutting surface.
Assemble the Primary Structure

Make sure the base is sturdy and all major components are aligned properly for structural realism. When assembling the arches, piers, and deck, take extra care to align each component accurately, referring back to your sketches and reference images.
Add Cable/Wire Elements

In this project, a key feature is the integration of wires to simulate the tension cables of the bridge. Add the wires one at a time to mimic the original Bac de Roda Bridge connections.
Add Secondary Details

Incorporate minor architectural elements: guardrails, stairs, and the supports.
Final Presentation – Add Lighting (Optional)

Add LED lights under the arches or along the road deck to highlight the form.
By following these steps, you can construct a detailed and functional scale model of the Bac de Roda Bridge. This model not only serves as a visual aid but also as a tool for understanding structural principles in architecture and engineering.
