Baby's First Hat - Cozy Crocheted Baby Hat for Newborn

Skein of soft yarn

Round 24-peg loom

Crochet hook

Crochet needle

Scissors

Make a Slip Knot

Wrap the yarn around your finger two times. Pull the first loop over the second then pull the second loop over the first. See video demonstration.

Attach Slip Knot to Loom

Locate the anchor peg on the side of the loom and slide the slip knot over the peg. Pull the two ends of the yarn to tighten the slip knot into place.

Wrap the Yarn Around the First Peg

Pull the yarn behind the first peg to the right of the anchor peg and wrap it around the peg one time.

Wrap the Yarn Around the Entire Loom

Repeat step three by wrapping the yarn around each peg until you reach the last peg to the left of the anchor peg.

Pull Yarn Down

Grip the loom from the inside as demonstrated in the photo and use your fingers to pull the yarn down to the base, rotating the loom and repeating until the yarn on each peg is flush with the base.

Wrap Yarn Around the Loom to Create a Second Set of Loops

Wrap the yarn around the pegs in the same manner as we did in Step 4 until you have created a second set of loops.

Pull the Loops Over Pegs

Push the crochet hook under the bottom loop of the first peg and pull it over the top of the peg to crochet the loops together. Repeat for each loop until all the loops have been pulled over the top of each peg.

Repeat Step 5

Pull the newly connected loops down to the base as in Step 5. You now have your first row.

Pull the slip knot off the anchor peg and use the crochet hook to push it through to the inside of the loom.

Create Rows for Hat Band

Repeat Steps 6, 7, and 8 four more times to create five rows. These rows will be the band of the hat.

Lift the bottom of the crocheted rows and pull the loops over the pegs as demonstrated in the photos.

Crochet Band Loops

Push the crochet hook under the bottom loop of the first peg and pull it over the top of the peg to crochet the band loops together. Repeat for each loop until all the loops have been pulled over the top of each peg.

Pull the Band Down to the Base

Pull the loops down to the base as in Step 5. The band is now created.

Create Rows for Hat

Repeat Steps 6, 7, and 8 to create 15 more rows.

Wrap the Yarn Around the Loom

Wrap the yarn around the circumference of the loom, then cut the yarn to create the length of yarn you will need to close the hat.

Thread the Yarn Through the Needle

Take the length of yarn you just cut and thread it through the crochet needle.

Put the Needle Through the Loop on the First Peg

Pull the needle through the loop on the first peg, dragging the yarn through the loop and lifting the loop off the peg. Repeat this step through every peg to cast the hat off the loom.

Pull Yarn to Close the Hat

Remove the yarn from the needle and pull on the yarn firmly to close the top of the hat.

Pull Yarn Through Top to Secure Hat Closing

Rethread the yarn through the crochet needle and poke it through the top of the hat and pull the yarn through three to four times.

Push Needle Through Top and Flip Hat Inside Out

Push the needle through the top of the hat and flip the hat inside out. Repeat Step 19 to further secure the hat closing. Tie the yarn into a knot and trim off the excess. Flip hat back to the right side out.

Thread the Anchor Yarn Through Needle

Thread the anchor yarn through the needle and crochet it into the inside of the band until it is short enough to trim off. Your baby hat is now ready for the pompom.

Make the Pompom

Loosely wrap several lengths of yarn around your hand leaving a short amount of yarn hanging loose. Use the loose end to secure the center of the gathered yarn by wrapping it around three to four times.

Thread the yarn through the crochet needle while keeping the yarn pulled tight around the center of the pompom. Push the needle through the top of the hat. Flip hat over to pull the string tight and tie it into a knot to secure the pompom. Cut off excess yarn.

Cut Loops of Pompom

Flip hat back upright. Slip finger through loops of pompom on one side. Slide scissors into the loops and cut evenly. Repeat for other side of pompom.

Fluff the yarn to create the pompom look. Congratulations. Your baby hat is finished!
