Baby Shower Gift - Wooden Intarsia Firefighter

I made this Baby Shower Gift for my Godchild. I became a Godmother of a wonderfull child.

To start with an Intarsia, you need to choose a design. I used the design of a little firefighter, because the father of my Godchild is a firefighter. I just searched on Google for a coloring page.

I will make my Intarsia on the bandsaw, yep, not with a scroll saw :). So I'll need to cut out all the pieces on paper and trace them onto my wood.

I used some woods I had laying around in the shop, I used three different species.

I'll need 2 planks of each board, so I'll end up with 6 boards. Of each type of wood I'll need a plank of 10mm thickness and 12mm thickness. So we can put some relief in the Intarsia.

Once you have your lumber, you need to decide which piece you want in which color of wood. And then you can start with tracing the pattern onto the wood.

You can adjust your shape by using the beltsander, and after every cut, you can testfit the piece. The art on the bandsaw, with intarsia, is to make the gap as small as possible.

When you're done with cutting all the pieces, you can start sanding them with the dremel and by hand.

If you want to make a baby shower gift like me, you can add the name and the date.

You can add all the details of the figure with a woodburner.

For the board I used 4mm plywood, with these dimensions: 54cm x 37cm.

For the border I used 17mm x 15mm wood slats and I've made a groove in it with the tablesaw for the board. I'll cut some miters on the mitersaw to finish the board and I'll glue it together.

Last time, sanding time to make everything really smooth. And after that you can start to glue all the pieces onto the board!

To finish put a few coats of spray lacquer onto the birthboard and you are done!
