With the development of energy and associated electrical networks for the transmission of alternating current, as a power source for various devices, a need arose for devices that change the magnitude of the voltage. Such universal electromagnetic devices that allow increasing or decreasing the initial voltage to the required value are transformers.

Over time, to ensure the stable operation of electrical appliances, mainly for household purposes, it became necessary to smoothly regulate the voltage. This became possible after the autotransformer was invented - a device in which the secondary winding is an integral part of the primary turns.

Autotransformers were massively used in the USSR during the era of mass distribution of tube TVs. Then the voltage of the networks was unstable, which caused distortion of the images. Users of this imperfect technique had to adjust the voltage from time to time to the level of 220 V.

Before the advent of voltage stabilizers, the only way to achieve optimal power parameters for household appliances of that time was the use of autotransformers.

How to safely test the power circuit of transformer?

To do this, insert a light bulb into the open circuit of the transformer's power supply. The lamp is connected to the 110V network through a switch.

When the switch is off the circuit is broken and the lamp is off, when the circuit is closed the lamp is on. It turns out if, instead of the circuit breaker, you turn on the power supply, the light will become a kind of closed-circuit indicator.

The transformer is switched on through a lamp.

Light indication:

1.The lamp is barely illuminated or does not light up at all, but when the button is closed, the lamp is brightly on. Everything is ok

2. The light is on brightly - a short circuit between 1 and 2, 3 and 4. Alternatively, you confused the mains and secondary windings.

Test Results and Repair

In my case, the problem was in the power cord and was solved simply by replacing it.

What other cases are there: Blown fuse - solved by replacing it. An open circuit on incoming or outgoing wires is solved by repairing or replacing them.

In the event of an open circuit or short circuit inside the transformer winding, the repair is not advisable as it is easier and cheaper to replace the whole device.
