Artsy Figurine Stand

Crayons are an interesting medium for me: I always want to use them, but rarely do.

When I do end up using crayons though, I do so a little too aggressively, leading to a large collection of snapped crayons. The idea of melting crayons always has a wow factor to it, but can be quite messy. As an alternative use for my broken crayons, I created this decorative figurine stand for my Bob Ross Funko Pop, and I think it turned out great!

Supplies

This is an incredibly customizable idea, so I'll list some alternatives later, but here is what I used:

Materials

  • Empty Alien Tape Roll
  • Thick Posterboard
  • Black Spray paint
  • Crayons
  • Hot Glue

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue Gun
  • Sandpaper
  • Crayon Sharpener

Make sure to use what works best for you!

Select a Base

I chose this Alien Tape roll, and traced and cut some posterboard to add a circular platform.

Any large tape roll should work, or even layers of wood to make your base. It doesn't even have to be circular! Really, just make sure the base fits your figurine, it doesn't have to follow this shape at all.

Finalize the Base

I glued on the platform, then sanded the edges a bit. I then sanded the tape roll so the black spraypaint I applied next would stick well.

Of course you may want a more colorful base, so feel free to add some different paints, patterns, and gradients!

Select Your Crayons

I had plenty of spare, broken crayons lying around that worked out to be the perfect height. Because I used several brands of crayons, I took the wrappings off and sharpened them manually to make them more uniform.

If you are looking for a different result, some options include leaving wrappers on, using a single brand of crayon, or finally using all those Cracker Barrel and Red Robin crayons for something!

Attach the Crayons to the Base

I used hot glue to attach the crayons to my base, and ended up making a gradient out of the different colors.

I'm pretty happy with how mine turned out, but I can think of tons of other ways to do it. Some are: Use all of one color scale, and theme it to the figurine, flatten the crayons tops at different heights and carve some to make a city skyline, use all kinds of crayons, and spraypaint them all at the end... the ideas are endless.

Proudly Display Your Figurine

Now that you have an amazing base for your figurine, make sure to display it where everyone can see! Whether the figurine remains the eye-catching detail, or your incredible base takes the mic, you now have a one-of-a-kind display to be proud of!
