Around the Sun☀️🪐

IMG_1781.jpg

This is a easy representation of the solar system. It's not really accurate because all the planets have the same angular velocity but we think that this model could be useful to see the representation of the movement of the planets.

Supplies

Basics:

  • Battery with minimum of 5 volt or adapter cable for power socket;
  • Stepper motor;
  • 8 iron spheres;
  • Magnets;
  • Hot glue;
  • Wood slabs;
  • Circle of plexiglas ( d. = 55 cm );
  • Light wood disk (d. = 50 cm );
  • Screws;
  • Wooden bar.

For decorations:

  • Black paint;
  • Glitters;
  • White marker;
  • Table tennis ball;
  • Toothpick.

Cutting

IMG_2274.jpg
  1. Cut the plexiglass in a circle (d. = 55 cm; 21.65 in);
  2. Cut the light wood in a circle (d. = 50 cm; 19.67 in);
  3. Cut the wood slab in a square (l. = 55 cm; 21.65 in);
  4. Cut four supports by the wooden bar (h. = 9 cm; 3.54 in);
  5. Cut a thickness of wood (h.= 4 cm; 1.57 in).

Then fix the wooden supports in the angles of the square made of wood using brackets and screws.

Orbits of the Planets

Measure the diameters of the planets' orbit:

-Mercury: 7 cm

-Venus: 10 cm

-Earth: 15 cm

-Mars: 21 cm

-Jupiter: 25 cm

-Saturn: 36 cm

-Uranus: 42 cm

-Neptune: 51 cm

Then draw them in the plexiglass circle.

Stepper Motor

  1. Connect the stepper driver to the stepper motor;
  2. Attach to the motor the thickness of wood using a screw;
  3. Put the wood disk on the motor and fix it.

Hot Glue

On the wood disk glue the magnets following the orbit of each planet, paing attetion to do not fix the magnets close beacuse there might be interferences between the magnets.

Create the tracks for the spheres with hot glue in the plexiglass disc.

Final Step

Put the plexiglass circle on the wooden supports and put the iron balls in the orbits. Now connect the motor to the power, and enjoy your little solar system!
