Apple Swirl:
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon powder
1/2 tsp ginger powder
2 apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
1 pastry sheet
1/2 stick of butter (melted)
1 egg
Brown or granulated sugar (to sprinkle on top)
Icing:
1 cup icing sugar
2 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Equipment
Measuring Cups: 1 cup, 1/2 cup*
Measuring Spoons: 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon*
2 small mixing bowls
1 large mixing bowl
1 spoon (regular size)
1 peeler
1 medium knife
Parchment paper
1 baking tray
1 rolling pin
1 piping bag (I used a Ziploc bag)
*Optional
Preheat the Oven
1) Preheat the oven to 350° F / 180° C.
Combine Apples and Dry Ingredients
1) Add the sugar, ginger, and cinnamon into a small bowl and combine them.
2) Pour the dry ingredients into a large bowl containing 2 finely diced apples. I used Granny Smith apples.
3) Mix them together until they form an even mixture.
Prepare the Pastry Sheet
1) I used a frozen Puff pastry sheet for this recipe. Use the instructions on the box to thaw it, and then place one pastry sheet onto a wooden board. You can use a rolling pin to flatten it.
2) Use a brush to spread the melted butter all over the pastry.
3) Evenly place the apple mixture onto the pastry.
4) Use a rolling pin to gently press the apples into the dough.
Create the Swirls
1) Use a knife to cut the pastry into around 7 long rectangular strips.
2) Roll each strip until it forms a spiral shape.
Bake the Apple Swirls
1) Place the apple swirls onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
2) Sprinkle them with brown or granulated sugar.
3) Brush the sides of the swirls with an egg wash.
4) Bake for 20 minutes (until the swirls turn golden brown).
Prepare the Icing
1) Add the icing sugar, milk, and vanilla extract into a bowl.
2) Mix them until they form an even mixture.
Drizzle Icing and Serve
1) Pour the icing into a piping bag. If you are using a Ziploc bag, put the icing inside and cut the corner off to turn it into a piping bag.
2) Drizzle the icing on top of the apple swirls and enjoy!
