Apple Fritters
This is an old Southern recipe. When we traveled to Louisiana years ago, I had homemade Apple Fritters which were delicious and decided to make up a recipe based upon what I learned on my trip. I’ve been making these fritters ever since and passing down to the next generation.
Supplies
A deep-fat fryer or electric skillet needed for frying Apple fritters.
Ingredients to Make Apple Fritters - Makes 2-3 Servings
1 cup cake flour
1 Tbsp. sugar
3/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 large egg, room temperature
1/3 cup whole milk
4 tsp. Butter, melted
1 Tbsp. Orange juice
2 tsp. grated orange zest
1/4 tsp. clear vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped peeled tart apple
oil for frying
Confectioners’ sugar
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Whisk ingredient together in bowl, set aside.
Mix Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, combine the egg, milk, butter, juice, orange zest and vanilla. Mix together with whisk.
Add Dry Ingredients to Wet
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients just until moistened.
Fold in Apples
Peel Granny Smith Apple and finely chop. Fold in apples with spatula.
Fry Apple Fritters
In a deep-fat fryer, heat 1/4 inch of oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Drop batter by rounded tablespoon into oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.
