Ingredients:

  • Apples (I used Granny Smith, but you can use whatever kind you want)
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 tsp of sugar (add another teaspoon or two if you want it more sweet)
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of sprite or 7up or even ginger ale.
  • Powdered sugar for topping (or try peanut butter, jam, etc)
  • Canola oil or vegetable for Frying (fill up your pot about 1/3 of the way full)

Prepare the Oil

First let's prepare our canola or vegetable oil. Fill up the pot about 1/3 of the way. This will be plenty. Then set it on the stove top, and turn to medium high heat.

Preparing the Batter

Next we will prepare the batter. First add your flour, then your sugar, then your vanilla extract, and finally add some Sprite (7up or Ginger ale works too). We will wind up adding about 1/2 cup of sprite. But add about half of that to start.

Stir

Next we stir the ingredients and continue to add sprite until we get a nice pancake batter like consistency.

Slicing the Apple

Next we slice up our apples. There are a few methods for doing this. You can use your knife, or my favorite method is by using a mandolin slicer. You want the apple slices to be about an 1/8 of an inch thick.

Cutting Out the Hole

Now let's cut out the hole. You can use a knife, or use a melon baller.

Dip and Fry

Now let's dip our apple into the batter, pick it up with a fork and let the excess batter drip off, then drop it in your hot oil flipping it with your tongs. It fries up fairly quickly, 20 to 30 seconds per side is all you really need, to get it nice and golden brown. Then remove it from the oil with your tongs, and place it on a cooling rack or on a paper towel lined plate.

Adding the Topping

I like to top them off with powdered sugar. You can have fun with the toppings, I have also used peanut butter, you could use jelly or jam, maple syrup, whatever you like. :) Now enjoy them!!
