My 10 year old is neck deep into animation. When he is not sleeping or studying, he makes flipbooks of freak imaginative stories. So I thought why not make an animation light box for him. Planned make it totally with paper. Scroll down to see the steps.

Materials

1.jpg

Glass or plexi glass (I used glass from an old photo frame)

Thick ivory paper

Tracing paper

Pencil

Glue

Cutter

Scissor

Measuring scale

Additionally some more materials are used. Which will come as we make it.

Cut and Measure

Cut 2 thick ivory paper just larger than the glass or plexi glass you have.

Use scraps of ivory paper to measure the thickness of the glass. Mine was 3 papers thick.

Cut Out Frame

Measure and cut the ivory paper interior so that it can hold the glass. Make 2 of them.

Fix Border

Cut thin strips of ivory paper and start making the border. Stick the layers of strips as we measured in the last step. so 3 layers will be good to hold the glass snugly. I used the scrap sheet that came out of the frame to make the border.

Make It Translucent

Cut a piece of tracing paper larger than the glass. Trim it to size and glue it inside the frame. Check it on the light for any errors on the paper. Now put the glass in the frame. And glue the other half of the frame in place.

Make the Stand

Cut 4 trapezoidal sheets of ivory. Glue 2 together so they should not be wobbly. When the glue dries. Glue them in place. Make sure to glue them opposite to the glass part or else your tracing paper will get damaged. Add some supports to stabilize the stands.

Test

When everything is dried and strong. Try making some animations. I have used the phone torch option. Also used the head of a fused led bulb as diffuser. So it works fine.

Finally Use It

The kid is happy with the outcome of the project. He will be using it rigorously to see what will be the lifespan of the animation light box.

Thanks!
