Things You’ll Need

  • 9 Inch Pie Crust
  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 2 Medium Brown Onions
  • Iceberg Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Package of Velveeta
  • Soy Sauce
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Brown Sugar
  • Olive Oil
  • Spices (Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder)

Animal Sauce

  • 4 Tbsp Real Mayo
  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup
  • White Vinegar
  • Sweet Relish

Tip #1 Adding water to the meat allows it to keep the moisture while soaking up the flavor

Preheat oven to 450 F. Start by placing a large skillet on medium heat and browning the ground beef. Once the meat is browned drain the oil from the pan. Next add in about a 1/2 cup of water with about a 1/2 cup of mustard, 1/4 cup brown sugar, along with salt, pepper, onion powder (Use your judgement on amounts). Let this simmer on stove.

Onion Prep

Tip #2 The sharper the knife the safer the slicing

Next get another skillet out, set on medium heat, and drizzle olive in the pan. Slice up onions and add into heated pan with about three packets of soy sauce or about 2 tablespoons. Let onions sweat and caramelize on low-medium heat. Do not let them burn!!! Creates a horrible taste.

Tip #3 Make sure pie crust is over the edge a bit as it will shrink a bit when baking

While your onions are caramelizing get your pie crust ready for baking. Lay crust out over 9 inch glass pie dish. Using your hand form crust into dish, prick the bottom with fork, and secure edges with fork as well. Place in oven for about 6 minutes.

Animal Sauce

Once onions are finished set them aside off of heat. Taste the meat mixture and tweak it with any spices you think it needs more of. Time to make the sauce! Add mayo, ketchup, a dash of white vinegar, and a good amount of sweet relish into a medium bowl. Mix it thoroughly and taste. Add more relish to taste.

Filling It Up

Tip #4 Letting the pie settle is a key part to presentation!

When pie crust 3/4 of the way done, remove from oven and begin filling with beef. Lower temperature of oven to 350 F. Fill it about 3/4 of the way. Next heat up Velveeta and drizzle over beef and top off with caramelized onions and half of the animal sauce. Do not fill pie to the very top leave a bit of room to add lettuce and tomatoes. Place back in oven for a 5 minutes while you dice tomatoes and lettuce.

Serve!

Once five minutes is up remove the pie from oven and let it set for about 5-10 minutes. Use a sharp knife to slice pie up into 8 pieces and using a pie spatula carefully remove a piece. Top this piece with diced lettuce and tomatoes, slather on more sauce, and serve!

Suggestions:

  • For a bit of spice add some of your favorite hot sauce to the meat, or right on top!
  • Add the lettuce and tomato on right before serving to prevent the lettuce from wilting.
  • Serve with a nice Pinot Grigio.
