An Old Display to a Monitor

Well, there I found an old laptop, that was already useless - cracked display hinges, dead batteries, a broken drive, low memory and an old processor in.

I dismounted the one and found a display which was OK with no issues. The display was LTN156AT05 with WXGA HD 1366x768 resolution. I stared searching for a driver and found the one - Kit for LTN156AT05 TV+HDMI+VGA+USB LCD LED screen Controller Driver Board

This made me to an idea to upcycle the old laptop display to a new monitor.

Supplies

  • LTN156AT05 display
  • Kit for LTN156AT05 TV+HDMI+VGA+USB LCD LED screen Controller Driver Board
  • 3D printer
  • 150g of "golden" filament ;)

3D Design

Well it took me a while to measure and design a frame with a stand and a box for controls.

All designs and appropriate print gcode files can be found attached here. It took about 20 hrs to print all that parts, in fact 2 nights when in the morning it was ready to pick up ;)

Assemble

Assembling took a while since it was relatively intuitive due to puzzle like design.

cIt was needed to click all corners and joints together, when placed at the display. The only tricky part was the last piece, but after a while it all clicked together and the puzzle was done.

The stands contain 2 apertures that fit to a frame corners apertures precisely. I used bamboo tooth sticks, which are fixing the stands well enough.

Next step was to complete the driver board and the control buttons. I used 5 short screws of 3 mm diameter to fix the boards. Bottom part worked very well, but the top part had to be redesigned and printed again.

Don't worry the previous chapter already contains fixed designs ;)

Try Out

The last step was to try it out.

I connected a 12V adapter and pressed the power button on the control box. The led turned from red to blue and the display showed the screen with no signal sign as expected.

The control box can be easily placed behind the monitor, and connected thru available cabled to a source of signal by HDMI, S-VIDEO, VGA or TV coax.

Yes it works !!!

If you found also such as display in an old laptop, you know what to do - happy creating, bastling and tinkering ;)
