Inspired by the famous Amsterdam Clock at Amesradum, which amazes people by making it look like a man is drawing the clock hands from behind, this project recreates the magic in a compact, aesthetic design. Using a round display, ButtonBoard with a built-in RTC, and a wooden frame, the clock blends technology with art. The man behind the display erases and redraws the clock hands dynamically as time progresses, creating a visually stunning and interactive experience.

Prepare Electronics

The first step in preparing the electronics is to obtain a video of the Amsterdam Clock where a miniature man draws the clock hands for each second and hour. A good source for this is Pixabay, and you can find an example video on YouTube here.

Once the video is obtained, use an MP4-to-GIF converter to extract time-based animations and convert them into GIF format. After conversion, resize the GIFs to 240x240 pixels to match the display's resolution.

Next, the resized GIFs need to be converted into .h files so they can be uploaded to the board. This can be done using the animated_gif_memory tool. After conversion, upload the .h files to the ButtonBoard, ensuring smooth animation playback on the round LCD display.

Once the files are successfully uploaded, verify the animations by running a test program to check the playback of each frame. Make sure the transition between different times is smooth and synchronized with the RTC to ensure accurate time representation.

Assemble the Electronics

Mount the ButtonBoard inside the wooden casing. Connect the round LCD display to the board. Wire the RTC module to ensure precise timekeeping. Connect the battery and the power management circuit.

: Prepare the Wooden Frame Base

To create a stable and aesthetic base for the clock, start by selecting a second wooden log to act as a stand. The base should be large and thick enough to provide firm support for the main log holding the display.

Begin by cutting a flat surface on both the bottom of the main log and the top of the base log to ensure proper alignment. Once cut, use wood glue or screws to securely attach the two logs together, allowing for stability. Optionally, a small groove can be carved into the base log to hide any power cables for a cleaner look.

Once assembled, sand the edges and surfaces of both logs for a smooth finish. If desired, apply a wood stain or varnish to enhance the natural grain and protect the wood from wear. The final result should be a sturdy, rustic stand that complements the artistic design of the Amsterdam Clock.

The new aesthetic design of the Amsterdam Clock creates an enchanting experience that captivates anyone who sees it. The unique illusion of a miniature figure sitting behind the display, actively drawing and erasing the clock hands every second, minute, and hour, mesmerizes viewers and makes timekeeping an artistic spectacle. The combination of a rustic wooden frame and modern digital animation seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, making this clock not just a functional timepiece but a conversation starter. Whether placed in a home, office, or gallery, this clock brings a sense of wonder, as if an invisible hand is sketching time itself, moment by moment.
