You never know when you will need a full set of dice. Make a small dice box using an Altoids tin to always keep a set on you. This box also doubles as a dice tray. This box fits a standard set of chessex dice, this set to be specific.

This is a really cheap and easy project that can be knocked out in half an hour. Also, if you don't already have an Altoids tin, you get a bunch of candy out of it too.

This method could really be extended to felt lining any box, I got this idea from Rybonator's video on a similar project.

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Altoids Tin
  • E6000
  • Felt - I used a 9"x12" piece from Walmart.

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Marker

Mark and Cut the Felt

So, now that we have our supplies its time to elevate this Altoids tin. First up, we need some felt to line it with.

We will need 3 pieces of felt, one for top, one for the bottom and one to go around the edges. To mark the felt pieces for the top and the bottom, place the box onto the felt and trace around it using a marker. Then cut it out. Place each piece in place and make sure it lays flat, trimming off any place that is too large, making sure you can press it down flat in the tin with no wrinkles or bubbles.

For the walls of the Altoids tin you will need a strip that is 17mm by 300mm or 5/8" by 12". Make sure the piece for the edges is longer than needed, you can always trim it later. If you are using the same size piece of felt that I am, cutting a thin strip off the long edge works well.

If you are using a different box that has thicker walls than an Altoids tin you will need to trim two times that thickness off of the piece that you cut out so that it fits inside the box. Measure the height of the walls after fitting the felt on the bottom, just to ensure that the heights will match up.

Glue in the Felt

With everything test fit you are ready to get it all stuck together.

E6000 is overkill for this application, so a thin layer or several lines back and forth across the bottom and around the edges of the bottom will make sure the felt doesn't go anywhere. Once you have the felt in place go back around and press down the edges to make sure they don't pucker. And then do the same for the top of the tin.

Give those a few minutes to set up.

For the edges, be careful not to drip any glue on the felt you have already glued down. Again, a thin line of glue around the edge at the top and bottom will be enough. Make sure to avoid the hinges a bit, to make sure that they still work well once we are done. When you add the edging felt start on the front edge, that way when you open the box you wont see it right off. Once you get back to where you started, trim off the extra. Again give that a bit of time to dry.

With all the felt in place go back and make sure there aren't any placing lifting up by pressing them back into the glue. If you can leave the tin open near a window for a few days so that the tin doesn't smell as strongly of E6000.

Add the Dice

Add your dice to the box and you are ready to roll. Go play your polar bear totem barbarian named Al Toid.
