Alternating Cable Cast on in the Round Tutorial
Alternating cable cast on in the round is a great way to make 1x1 ribbing with a rolled edge, similar to tubular cast on. This photo tutorial is showing the technique with a top down bulky slipper sock.
Supplies
-Double pointed knitting needles or circular knitting needles
-yarn required for pattern
Make a slip knot and place on your right hand needle. You only need a tail long enough to weave in at the end.
Insert left hand needle knit wise (from front to back) into the slip knot. Wrap yarn over left hand needle.
Pull yarn through the slip knot to create a new loop.
Place new loop on right hand needle.
Start Repeat
With yarn in front, insert left hand needle purl wise (from back to front) in between the last cast on stitches. Wrap yarn over left hand needle.
Pull yarn through to create a new loop.
Place new loop on right hand needle. You have just created a "purl" cast on stitch.
With yarn in back, insert left hand needle knit wise in between the last cast on stitches. Wrap yarn over left hand needle.
Pull yarn through to create a new loop.
Place new loop on right hand needle. You have just created a "knit" cast on stitch.
Repeat steps 5-10 until you have the number of stitches you need. To easily tell which stitch you last worked, look at the working yarn. If the working yarn is in front, you just worked a purl stitch. If the working yarn is in back, you just worked a knit stitch. When looking at your cast on stitches on the needle, the ones that look like a twisted "v" that sit forward are the knit stitches, and the ones with the straight across bump that sit a little behind are the purl stitches.
Join in the round and place marker. The first stitch is always a purl.
p1, k1 around. Continue in p1, k1 rib for as long as you need.
