Alphabet Baby Quilt

This colorful baby alphabet themed quilt was a gift for one special boy. Great for baby tummy time, for playing, or for learning. The quilt consists of 26 letter and 30 applique blocks.

What you will need:

  • Quilters Multi Mat
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Fabric Marker
  • Iron
  • Sewing Machine

Come Up With a Pattern for Your Blanket

1. Sketch a picture for each letter: anything that would be representative of specific letter.

2. Organize it in space

3. Color it: it might help you to see what kind of fabric you will need and it will help you to coordinate the colors.

Pre-wash and Iron Your Fabric

Pre-washing your fabric will preshrink and relax it, as well as remove excess dyes. Ironing will make it much easier to work with it, and it will make the dimensions of the cuts more precise.

Dealing With Fabric Blocks

1. Cut 28 rectangles (dimensions: 25 x 20 cm), adding about 0.7 cm for seem allowance.

2. Use fabric marker to draw the appliqué details (or use a template), add seem allowance, cut the details.

3. Use turned edge technique, hand sew the edges, and iron the detail.

4. Place the detail on the base fabric and pin it; machine sew it to the base fabric.

5. Embroider small details on your appliqués (Ex: eyes, etc).

6. Use contrast color to cut 28 rectangles (dimensions: 15 x 20 cm), adding about 0.7 cm for seem allowance.

7. Cut out letters, add seem allowance, pin them to the base fabric and then machine sew it.

8. Combine the letter and appliqué blocks together, sew it together, iron, and you will get one full block (see picture)

Combine the Full Blocks

1. Combine four full blocks together, sew them.

2. Combine all of the rows together, sew them.

Layer a Quilt Sandwich

1. Make a quilt sandwich: backing fabric, batting, and your top block; make sure your batting and the backing fabric is larger than your quilt top (>5cm).

2. Pin your sandwich together, baste around the perimeter of the blocks, then machine sew it together.

1. Use a fabric marker to create a quilting pattern (use your imagination!)

2. Quilt it (see picture).

Binding

1. Trim the edges of the batting

2. Sew the binding.... and you're done!
