Aloha Lunch Bag
Do you take your lunch to school or work? Here's a clever way to make a little bag just for that purpose.
Most Hawaiian shirts that you find at thrift shops would make cute lunch bags.
It's washable and adorable!
This would make great gifts for family, friends and coworkers. One size fits all!
Supplies
For this project you will need the following:
Hawaiian shirt- cut a piece 14" x 26"
white or solid color shirt for lining- cut a piece 14" x 26"
matching thread
sewing machine
measuring tape
straight pins
Scissors
2" length of Velcro (optional)
Side Seams
Sew the sides of the bag up with 1/2" seam allowance.
Sew the sides of the lining also with 1/2" seam allowance.
Corners
Open bottom corners and pin seam open. Stitch across 2" above corner, perpendicular to the side seams. Clip corners off 1/4" from stitching. This step helps the bag have a flat bottom.
Handles
Cut 2 pieces of fabric 5" x 20" Fold each in half lengthwise, press. Open and fold the outside edges to the center fold. Bring the folded edges together so that the handle is 4 layers thick with the cut edges on the inside. Pin. Stitch 1/4" from both long edges and again down the center of each handle. Stitch a total of 5 rows of stitching down each handle.
The handles are optional.
Lining
Leave lining wrong side out. Turn outside of bag right side out. Press side seams open. Place lining inside bag, matching side seams. Turn top edge of lining down 1". Turn top edge of bag down 1". Pin top edges together. The raw edges should be in between bag and lining.
Top Edge
Place ends of each handle in between the bag and lining. Pin in place making sure both handles are even and equally spaced. Stitch around entire top edge of bag. Sew again 1/4" below stitching. You can sew a 2" section of Velcro at the top center for a closure if you like.
Now wasn't that easy?
