Account Permissions Tutorial

Account permissions tutorial by: Will Carlson and Alec Manzardo

Navigate to the start menu and click control panel

Once in control panel, click add or remove user accounts under user accounts and family safety

Select create new account

Make sure the account is a standard user, and give the account a name

Under additional things you can do, select the option to set up Parental Controls (With a shield next to it) [1]

[1] Parental controls contains an abundance of features such as time limits, game restrictions and program restrictions.

Select the new (child) account

Once in this menu, select the option to turn parental controls on, enforce current settings

In the time limits section, you can block certain times of the day on certain days of the week by selecting the time frames that the account cannot use the computer

In the game controls section, you can choose whether or not the account can play games, block games by rating, and allow or block specific games

In the allow and block specific programs section (Application Restrictions) you can allow the account to use all programs, or individually select[1] which programs can be used

*[1] If you scroll down there is an option the Check all so that you only need to uncheck the programs you wish to deny instead of going down and allowing each program one at a time

Once you have set up parental controls to your liking, click OK and exit out of control panel. Go to the desktop, right click on an empty portion of the screen, go to the new option and select folder

Once you have given the new folder a name, right click on it and select properties

Select the security tab at the top of the window, and click the advanced button near the bottom of the window

Once you are in advanced options, select Change Permissions

Click the Add option

Type in the name of your new account in the text box that says Enter the object name to select. Then, click check names to make sure that it recognizes the name you typed in. Once the file path to your account is shown, select OK.

Your new account should now show up in the permission entries. Either double click the entry or select it and click edit to edit its permissions. You will now be in a menu that gives you the option to allow or deny the actions that the new account can perform with the folder. check the boxes to allow or deny the permissions you want, and click OK once you are finished [1]

[1] These permissions include read, write and execute. These are especially useful if you do not want another person to be able to change certain files or even access them. Can be used on children or if you are an admin of a public computer.

Finally, select apply to finalize all changes you have made in the permissions
