A Big HELLO to everyone from Australia. I would like to share with the world, a very special sandwich to all Australians, the very famous VEGEMITE TOASTIE.

The classic Vegemite spread is a staple pantry item in all Australian kitchens and is enjoyed by all ages, young and old. Vegemite is a dark savory spread invented in Australia in 1922, made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. Rich in B vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and folate (B1, B2, B3 and B9). Vegemite is very similar to other branded yeast spreads such as Marmite, Promite, Mightymite, AussieMite, Ozemite, German Vitam-R and Swiss Cenovis.

Supplies

  • Toastie press (Also known as Fill Toastie, Toast & Melt press, Jaffle Iron or Sandwich press)
  • Vegemite
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • White bread, sliced
  • Butter
  • Cutting board

Lay four slices of white bread down on to a cutting board and butter each slice.

The butter will melt the outside of the toastie, whilst it is inside the toastie press and create a crisp, tasty outer shell. You can also not butter the toastie, but will be a little tasteless and wont result as well. You can also op' to have additional butter, by buttering all sides of the slices. A little guilty tasty pleasure.

You can use other bread varieties like multigrain, wholemeal, rye and so forth. Which ever suits your preferance.

Put the slices together, so that the butter is together, whilst you put a layer of vegemite on the 'inside.

Don't over spread the vegemite, it is a very salty, bitter product. Unless you like a bit of tang.

Prepare Cheddar cheese by slicing and laying ontop of the vegemite.

You can save time by using pre-sliced cheese. Or if you have grated cheese ready to go. Cheddar works best but always switch it up and try different variations for fun.

Place the sandwich into the press, butter side down. Then finish off by closing the sandwich with the top slice, butter side up. Close the press shut and let cook until golden brown shell appears.
