A Talking Steampunk Thermometer

DSC_0588.JPG

Hi there,

today I would like to introduce you a new steamunk project of mine which is relatively easy to reproduce.

Apart from the brass parts, you can choose other housings. Boxes, bowls .... whatever you want. Limits only the imagination.

Well, I myself as a steampunker of course chose the appropriate from brass. ;)

I wish you a lot of fun with the reproduction of your own speaking thermometer. Let´s start.....

We Need !!

Arduino Uno , Mega....

MP3 shield

Micro Sd Card

LM35 Temperature Sensor

3 Watt mini Amplifier

3 green Led with Resistor

3 Watt mini Speaker

Step Down Converter

12 V Power Supply or other. I had only 12 volt in my stock. ( I use Step Down Converter to transform the 12 V to the right one ) But do not forget. The arduino requires 9 v and the mini amplifier 5 v. So do not choose too small. 1 amp should have it as current.

Thin Cables

Glass Lenses

Various acids and Sulfur Liver for dyeing the brass.

2 K Resin

Some Brass Parts, a old Brass Horn

A small piece of perforated sheet of copper or other Things to build your own Thermometer.

Sample Assembly,soldering and Patinate

Arrange everything as you like it best. To fix with hot glue to make an overall picture of the final result. You like it you can solder the parts together. Important is that you however designed so that you later still to the elektronic comes around in order to possibly re-code the source code of the arduino.

The patination is not quite so simple and I have written here already a guidance. Extreme caution is required with acids and lyes. If you dilute acids: Please give acid in water and not vice versa!

After the patination, I spray the whole with zaponlack to avoid fingerprints.

Arrange and Assemble

The copper spiral has a diameter of 100 mm and is available in the sanitary trade. You can simply cut off the desired piece.

Insert a led in

I closed the opening with small magnifying lenses. Which has the effect that the led's with a beautiful luminous point radiate down. To each of the saw-out lamp holders and wire it with wire. Do not forget the necessary resistance.

For the led lighting and the main voltage I have ever used a microswitch ( on/off).

Since the electronic components are now all in a brass case, you have to protect them from getting no contact. I have a small piece of cardboard pasted under the board and then attached with hot glue in the housing.

Electronics

The assembly of the electronic is very simple. The mp3 shield on the arduino board-ready. Now we connect the red cable from the sensor to the 5v port. The black cable with gnd and the yellow cable with A0.

If you have enough space in your housing so you can provide the power supply and the headphone output with a plug. With me this was relatively tight and I have this cable directly soldered to the board.

Programming !!!

To use the mp3 shield you need 2 more libraries.

– SFEMP3Shield
– SDFat

Important is still to mention! You should have a suitable mp3 file for every temperature change. Ie, e.g. 17 grad. You need an mp3 file with the name track017.mp3 for 23 degrees, track023.mp3 ... and so on.

So make your best 40 files. From 0 degree to 40 degrees, whatever you want. Store the Files on sd card and insert it on the sd slot on the Mp3 shield. Speak it with the audiorecorder or let it speak. A good site for this is:
