I made a planter out of pallets and old wood. I had the idea of building a planter but hadn't been given the chance till now. I decided on a planter because it is very useful for gardens. This summer I wanted to plant some vegetables and have a small garden. To put this plan into motion a planter is what I wanted.

Supplies

pallet wood or old wood, jigsaw cutter, hammer, screws, a drill, a minor saw, panel wood, a measuring tape, pencil.

Make a Outline

For this step, a bit of research was conducted. It is important that you go through the planning of this planter so as to make fewer mistakes and use your resource effectively. My planter came to be about 5'11" long, 3'8" wide and the height is about 2'5". It is a good idea to have a plan in mind when building anything.

Find Some Old Wood

This step is a lot harder said than done. Supermarket places always have old pallets or even around town. What I worked with were some pallets my teacher no longer needed and had some wood from past projects.

Take Apart a Couple of Pallets

This step is pretty easy but find two good pallets of wood for your sides and take the wood of the side that has the least amount of material, you may need to take out a couple of nails which is why a hammer would come in handy you should end up with something like this.

Put Together the Frame and Support

Once you have the wood pallets take some would and place it under the pallets at the ends. You can decide how wide your planter is going to be here mine came to 44 inches. After adding the two at the end and another 3 one in the middle and one in the middle of the end and middle. This step is a little difficult to do alone you may need assistance from a friend.

Legs

This step is where legs are going to be made to get the planter off the floor. I cut about 6 inches of to make my legs. I cut 6 of those and had one near each corner and the other two close to the middle of course these went under the supports.

The Bottom of Planter

Most planters have only wood on them which you can do. Instead of wood, I had an old truck bed and cut the bottom of it to fit the bottom of the planter. I put screws to secure it down then I went and put drainage holes in the old truck bed. I did this to keep the plants healthy.

Fill in Some of the Gaps

In my pallet wood, the were some gaps so I decided to use some plywood and cover to do this you would only need to measure out the height and length of the gap. With those measurements you would cut the pieces you need make sure that the would is about 2 inches longer than you need this is so you have wood to put a screw in.

Finish the Sides

To finally close the Planter you need another two pieces of wood and need to place them at the ends this is where you decide how deep the planter will be mine is about 22 inches deep. After drilling them in you need to get some more panel wood and close it off.

Some More Supports

To make sure it is sturdy I put a piece of wood under the wood at the ends and next to the panel wood this is to keep it from caving in on itself.

Support and Fill Ins

This step is to make sure the planter is sturdy and has no gaps, we are all humans, and making a perfect planter may not be possible. If there are gaps you can use plastic to put on the inside but be sure to not cover up the holes made at the bottom.

Plant

You can finally pick out what you would like to plant in the summer. I decided on some tomatoes and jalapenos. This was a very big project and having a friend or two is very helpful. Used a lot of prior knowledge to do this project. In the end, it was very rewarding and I hope that this may give you some guidance in making your own planter.
