I needed a desk lamp so I decided to make one out of junk things lying around in the house. I think it came out looking decent.

I had already finished the lamp before i came across this site and i made it so that its difficult to take apart and so some parts i couldn't photograph separately. the good thing about making things from scrap is that you dont have to search for the exact things mentioned here and can find other thing that can work in its place.

Things to look for are:

1. Aluminum bottle

2. Coke can

3. Small hinge

4. COB 3w LED with driver

5. Small switch

6. Wires

7. Cable for power outlet

8. Telescopic radio antenna

9. Angle brackets

10. Assortment of nuts and bolts

Putting It All Together.

I cut the bottle at an angle like you can see in the pictures.

Drill four holes for the hinge and secure it using four nuts/bolts.

Screw the L brackets on the bottom of the bottle in line with the hinge and attach the antenna to it.

The COB LED has a mounting clip which you can put a long bolt through and also go through the neck of the bottle so the light is secured in the neck and the bolt also creates an attachment point for the other end of the antenna.

The antenna keeps the top of the bottle in position where you want to angle the light.

I stashed the LED driver at the bottom of the bottle and run the DC out wires up the inside wall to the LED.

Connect the switch in the positive line to the LED and press fit it in the mouth of the bottle like in the pictures.

Drill a hole at the bottom of the bottle for the power cable. I used a bolt and drilled through a hole for the cable. It simply makes it look neat.

I found that a coke can fit perfectly inside the bottle and creates a wall for the lid to rest on when closed and also looks kinda cool i think.

I put a small but heavy chunk of metal at the bottom to make the base heavy/stable enough so it doesn't topple. To finish it i cut the bottom of the coke can and pushed it inside the bottle to keep the driver and the weight secured and hidden at the bottom.

When it was all put together i fine tuned the movement of the lid and tightened all the screws.

Using It...

It's great to keep by the bed and to read at night or keep it on a desk. The lower part also acts as a pen/pencil stand so its great if you want to write too.
