Making a Bad Piggies Piniata

The goal of this ible is to show you how to make a bad piggies piniata.

The required materials are quite simple

1. Baloon (for the shape)
2. newspaper
3. flour and water in a 1:1 mix
4. green tissue paper
5. white paper (tissue or regular, it's just for the eyes)
6. a plastic cup (for the nose)
7. glue to hold the plastic cup just enough to apply the next layer (crazy glue if you want to go faster; you can save a lot of money by getting generic 2oz bottles)
8. stuffing prizes (preferably egg shaped!)
9. string or yarn

The first layer is going to serve as a base. Layers are applied by soaking strips of news paper (6-7 inches by 2-3 inches work nicely) in the 1:1 mixture of flour and water, after which you run it between 2 fingers to remove the excess so that it can dry properly.

After the first layer has dried, you want to make a rope harness around the balloon. If you don't want the rope to move, you can put a drop of crazy glue. Crazy glue is great because a small dab will help prevent shifting as you apply the second layer.

You also need to apply the nose. When you apply the crazy glue, don't try to push the container down. It only needs to touch lightly in a few spots. When you put the papier maché, just apply it around the edges to hold the container in place when it tries. If you cover it up right away, it may get too heavy and fall while it dries.

To help with the drying time, it can be worth figuring out a place to hang it up with good aeration so you get an even and thorough drying job.

On the third layer, we can fully cover the rest of the nose.

Depending on the age of the people who will be playing with the pinata, you can add layers. 2 layers of news paper should be good, especially if we add more for colour.

Now we do the same thing, but use tissue paper to add colour. This is also the step where we add the ears and eyes by cutting the shapes we want. The ears need extra tabs to hold down, and you can have fun making the teeth stick out like in the animations.

Before adding the tissue paper, I popped the balloon and put the loot in the piggy.

Tissue paper is very thin and so I recommend applying the paste to the ball and simply putting the tissue paper flat on it and pressing it in; it has a tendency to tear if you try to dip and drain it. Again, it is important to let each layer dry before applying the next one. With tissue paper 4-6 hours should suffice for each layer to be dry enough to be workable.
