6+ Months Baby Food Recipes (Stage 1- Homemade Babyfood Recipes)

I am happy to share some easy homemade baby food recipes that I made for my baby girl :)

I have added 6 recipes in 6 steps along with the video. Offer recipes 1,2,3 during initial weeks and recipes 4,5,6 during the following weeks of solids. Please read the tips as they are all based on my experience with my baby girl.

Tips
: ( for 6+months baby food)
  • Consult your Paediatrician or General practitioner about when to start solids for your baby. They will offer the best advice depending on your babies daily (feeding/activities/sleep) routine.
  • I started solids for my baby during the last week of the 6th month and the noticeable sign was she started waking up every 3 hours at night due to hunger around 5 and a half months.
  • How much to serve : (depends on your babies appetite too:)
    starting week (1- 2 tsp)
    2nd week - (2 tsp - 2.5 tsp)
    3rd week - (1 Tablespoon)
    4th week - (1.5 Tablespoon)
  • How many meals a day? For the first 3-4 weeks, your baby will be needing just one meal a day. (If you feel your baby is ready for 2 meals by 3rd or 4th week of starting solids, you can offer cooked fruit puree as 2nd meal -refer my 7+ months baby food recipes:)
  • Try new food every 2 - 4 days
  • Always test the temperature of the food before feeding them. Offer luke warm foods (as babies tend to love lukewarm foods than the room temperature foods).
  • Offer runny consistency food for first 4-5 days and medium-runny consistency for the following weeks to a month to help their digestive system slowly accommodate to solids.
  • Give at least 20ml water 2-3 times a day and little before and after feeds. Babies like luke warm water...I noticed my baby likes to drink luke warm water (almost same as breast milk temperature)
  • If you don't give them enough water, it will lead to constipation. It can be quiet challenging to make them drink water but it is worth the effort
  • Babies may not open their mouth for first 2-3 days when you feed solids. They might taste the food with tongue and doesn't eat/swallow for first few days. But don't assume they are not ready for solids at this moment. Feed them everyday. By day 3 or 4 they will learn to open their mouth and eat/swallow. (You can have a look at my videos)
  • Offer solids atleast 25-30minutes after breast feeding/formula so that they will eat without any fuss and wouldn't make their tummy full. I always give solids 40 - 45 minutes after breastfeeding as I noticed she eats well and loves eating food:) (If I rush her to eat solids soon after feeding milk she doesn't eat much and keeps playing:)
  • Always have ready baby cereals enriched with iron, folate etc handy (as it will be easy to prepare when baby dislike some homemade foods:)
  • Offer breast milk / formula as usual on first month of solids or one time meal days and reduce by half after a month
  • My baby liked all home made foods (except cooked sweet tangy apples:)
  • You can freeze the cooked-mashed baby foods for a month (I never froze foods as I always prepared daily) (If you wish to freeze baby foods, store the foods in a small food container, tightly seal them and place them in a section of freezer where there is no raw/uncooked foods ). To thaw the foods, place the frozen food container on a hot-water bath for 5 minutes or until lukewarm temperature to touch.
  • After feeding, discard any leftover food in the feeding dish.
  • Most importantly, watch for any signs of food allergies like rashes, fever or any unusual changes in babies
  • I would highly recommend buying a hand/stick blender for making onetime or bulk meals for babies ( and I would say this is a must have for every kitchen as it can be very handy for grinding soups, purees, instant drinks, curry pastes and more:)
