4th of July 7 Layer Jell-O
Looking for the perfect dish to bring to a 4th of July Party on a hot Summer day? Well, this spin on the rainbow 7 Layer Jell-O recipe will be a huge hit. By making this creamy and fruity gelatin dish with festive colors, it will be an amazing addition to any patriotic celebration.
This recipe is very easy to follow as I have included images and a step by step breakdown. Since there are 7 layers, patience is key. This is because each layer needs to form before adding. Follow each step in its entirety and you will have show stopping dessert!
This recipe is different than others because it not only is allows the chef to use flavors and colors that are meaningful to the event and it doesn't always have to be the classic rainbow colors.
Note: This recipe will take about half a day to complete and must be refrigerated overnight before serving.
STEP 1 - Obtain Ingredients and Utensils
- 1 package (3 ounces) raspberry gelatin
- 1 package (3 ounces) cherry gelatin
- 2 package (3 ounces) blue raspberry gelatin
- 4 cups boiling water, divided
- 2-1/2 cups cold water, divided
- 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups sour cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Measuring Cups
- 2 Pitchers or Bowls
- Saucepan
- Medium Pot
- Wooden Spoon
STEP 2 - Prepare the First Layer of Jell-O
- In a bowl, dissolve raspberry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water.
- Add 1/2 cup cold water; stir.
- Pour into a 13-in. x 9-in. dish coated with cooking spray; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 3 - Prepare the Gelatin Mixture
- In a saucepan, sprinkle unflavored gelatin over 1/2 cup cold water. Let stand for 1 minute.
- Stir in milk and sugar.
- Cook and stir over medium heat until gelatin and sugar are dissolved.
STEP 4 - Combine the Gelatin Mixture and Vanilla Sour Cream
- Remove the gelatin mixture from heat.
- Whisk in sour cream and vanilla until smooth.
- Combine the gelatin mixture and the vanilla sour cream

- Spoon 1-2/3 cups creamy gelatin mixture over the first flavored layer.
- Chill until set but not firm
STEP 5 - Prepare Second Layer of Jell-O
- In a bowl, dissolve blue raspberry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water.
- Add 1/2 cup cold water; stir.
- Pour on top of a creamy gelatin mixture 13-in. x 9-in; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 6 - Pour on Creamy Gelatin Mixture
- Using the same mixture that was made in Steps 3 & 4, pour the creamy gelatin mixture on top of the Blue Raspberry Jell-o 13-in. x 9-in; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 7 - Prepare Third Layer of Jell-O
- In a bowl, dissolve cherry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water.
- Add 1/2 cup cold water; stir.
- Pour on top of a creamy gelatin mixture 13-in. x 9-in; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 8 - Pour on Creamy Gelatin Mixture
- Using the same mixture that was made in Steps 3 & 4, pour the creamy gelatin mixture on top the Cherry Jell-o 13-in. x 9-in; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 9 - Prepare Fourth Layer of Jell-O
- In a bowl, dissolve Blue Raspberry in 1 cup boiling water.
- Add 1/2 cup cold water; stir.
- Pour on top of a creamy gelatin mixture 13-in. x 9-in; refrigerate until set but not firm, about 30 minutes.
STEP 10 - Refrigerate
- Refrigerate overnight to ensure it is fully set
