4WD Fishing Rod Storage Mod

Todays project: Fishing rod storage for 4WD

Ok, so a bit of a backstory behind why I wanted one of these. I am currently living in Perth, Western Australia and recently found out that the fishing rod holders that go on the bull bar of your 4WD are soon to become illegal. This style is still legal (Go figure!).

Expense: low

I started by buying everything from Bunnings (Australia's largest hardware store chain).
Here is the list of items purchased:
*priming fluids protek-$4.50
*PVC cement solvent protek- $5.50
*PVC threaded cap 100mm radius- $4.00
*3x stainless steel hose clamps- $15.66
*push on PVC cap- $1.64
*PVC pipe 3m, 100mm radius- $21.45
*black spray paint (optional and not recommended as I will explain later on why)

TOTAL: $52.75

In order to start, we need to clean the pipe with the priming fluid. This will rid the PVC pipe of any printed barcodes and any dirt/grime that has built up while the pipe has been sitting in the shop. I also used this time to cut the pipe to my desired length, I found that 3m was just a bit too long. I found using the jig saw cut through the pipe like butter.

Next we make sure to dry fit the parts, making sure the fit well.

Then using the cement, add even amounts to both surfaces you are gluing. Have a rubber mallet handy so you can snug fit everything. This stuff dries very quickly so not a time to mess around.

So, I spray painted mine. Mainly because I wanted it to have that snazzy look and match with the rest of the ute. The main issue with the spray painting is that it comes off the PVC very easily. One little knock and all you see is the white underneath. This may have been remedied if I used black vinyl dye (but I have never used it). What does everyone else think?

I also spray painted the stainless steel clamps, I also don't know how long the paint will stay on them.

I used the clamps to secure to my roof rack. I was thinking of putting glue inside the screw mechanism so they could never be open again for security but decided against, you never know when you might want to modify the tube.

For example I was thing of adding a cord to the unscrewing lid so it will never be lost. Some how a lock to the unscrewing cap so the fishing rods can not be stolen.

So all done, very easy build and all very self explanatory.

Only took an hour or two to complete and I am happy with the finish. I am able to hold multiple fishing rods and large pole gaff. I am also thinking of storing camping annex poles in there as well.

Hi Everyone, I am writing this a few months after the build and due to a few comments about painting the tube black I bought I would do a bit of science. I have bought a temp data logger from EBAY and recorded the temperature over a normal end of summer week in Australia. The results are show and one conclusion can be gathered from these results. Yes painting the tube black has absorbed a lot of heat. On the 1/03/16 we can see the temp only rose to 29-30 degrees Celsius, but in the tube it was 45-46 degrees Celsius. Thanks for the comments, I don't know if this kind of temps would do damage to the rods if anyone has any ideas hit me up.
