4 Strand Round Braid

In this instructable, I will show you how to make a 4 strand round braid. 4 strand round braids are a simple way to increase the strength of rope you have on hand by evenly distributing the load across several strands. In addition, the 4 strand flat braid can make a nice looking necklace or lanyard. Without further ado, let's begin!

There are several ways to start a 4 strand braid. You can either make an overhand knot with the ends, or use two pieces and be a bit more creative. I have provided several examples in the pictures.

This part is a bit hard to describe, and photograph. I will do my best regardless. You will want to grab a set of two strands between your thumb and forefinger with each hand. Twist them both 180 degrees clockwise. Now, grab two new sets, one set of the two closest to you and the other set of the two furthest away from you. Next, turn them both 180 counter clockwise, grab new sets, and repeat. With a bit of work, you can become extremely fast (as much as or exceeding 1 foot per minute)

Once you have reached the desired length, you can tie off the loose ends. A simple overhand may suffice, but if you're just going to leave the end for an extended period, I would recommend square knots.
