3d Printed Jurassic Park Gates

What have they got in there, King Kong?

I decided to make this project for my Jurassic Park (yes, "Park".. not "World") obsessed nephew. He's been making a lot of Dinosaur themed things with his collection of LEGO® bricks lately so I thought it would be a good idea to make this for him.

In keeping with his love of the coloured bricks I also decided to make the base LEGO® compatible, that way he can still get creative and keep building things.

My build is based on a 3d model created by Drussell19 on Thingiverse, I just had to make a few modifications to make it 3d printable and to add the hinges.

To create the gates you'll need the following tools and parts:

• 3d printed pieces
• Hot-melt glue and glue gun
• Masking tape

To add the extra finishing touches I used:

• Red and Yellow enamel paint for the Jurassic Park text
• Brown spray paint for the gates
• Stone effect spray paint for the pillars and fire torch detail
• Modellers stone ballast for the base
• Selection of LEGO® plants and flowers for the base

The build consists of the following main parts, these are all held together with hot-melt glue as per the assembly diagram provided:

• Three part base
• Left and right pillar
• Upper support
• Jurassic Park text
• Pair of gates (fitted with butt type hinges)

To assemble follow the guideline below, use the assembly diagram for reference if required.

1. Glue the three part base, using hot-melt glue on the central join piece to hold everything together. There are three studs on each side of the join to make it easier to align.
2. Glue the upper support to both pillars.
3. Glue the assembled pillars to the base. There is an indentation in the base outlining the shape of the pillars, this helps align the pillars on the base and also provides an edge for the glue to adhere to.
4. The Jurassic Park text is fitted by gluing it to the front of the upper support. If you are painting the project, don't glue the text until painted.
5. The gates are fitted by slotting the hinge "pin" of the gate into the "butt" on the pillar.
6. The fire torches push-fit into the holes on the pillars, they are secured in place with glue.

To complete the look of your Jurassic Park gates you can paint the individual pieces.

• Spray paint the gates / doors with a brown paint
• Paint the text with a yellow enamel paint using a brush, once dry follow up with a red enamel to paint a text inline
• The main pillars are spray painted using a stone effect paint, be sure to mask the base thoroughly before spraying. You want to avoid getting paint on the LEGO studs
• I used a fine modellers ballast on the base to create a sandy road look, this also hides the join in the base. Brush some PVA glue onto the base and sprinkle on the ballast, leave to set and brush off the loose bits
• To finish the look I added some LEGO plants and flowers
