3D Printed DIY Wall Clock

In this project, we will create a unique 3D-printed wall clock. The clock features individual rectangular strips for each digit and a center plate to house the gearbox. This guide will take you through modeling, printing, assembling, and installing your custom wall clock.

Supplies

  • Clock module with clock hands (hour, minute, second)
  • Stencil paper (2D file provided)
  • Double-sided tape (1inch width)
  • Paper Tape (for hanging the stencil)

  • Basic tools (scale, cutters, scissors)
  • 3D printer

Modeling the Parts

I modeled all the parts in Autodesk Fusion 360 needed for this project.

The parts include:

  • Short Rectangular Strips: These represent the digits "1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11."
  • Long Rectangular Strips: These represent the digits "12, 3, 6, 9."
  • Clock module case: This has a diameter of 9 cm and includes a specific cutout to fit the clock module.

Note- Each part is designed to be easily identifiable and placed on the wall according to the stencil provided.

3D Printing the Parts

Use the STL files given above and print the following parts using a 3D printer:

  • 8* Short rectangular strips
  • 4* Long rectangular strips
  • 1* Clock module case

I used black filament for a sleek and modern look. However, you can use any color that matches your theme or decor.

Attach double-sided tape to the back of all the printed parts. Make sure to:

  • Cut any extra tape that extends beyond the edges of the parts.
  • Ensure the tape is not weak or old for a secure hold.

Assembling the Clock Module

  • Place the clock module behind the module case inside the specific cutout.
  • Secure the module with a bolt from the front, provided with it.

Attaching the Hands

Attach the hour, minute, and second hands to the module, ensure they are properly aligned, and move freely.

Now that the assembly is complete, we move on to the installation part where we use a stencil to align the clock symmetrically.

Using the Stencil

  • Check the size of your stencil paper, use at least (40cm*40cm)
  • Use the provided file to create your stencil.
  • You can use a laser cutter or plotter or you can do it by hand using a sharp blade.

Tape the stencil to the wall where you want to place the clock, ensuring it is positioned correctly.

Tip- I have done it manually, and I think you should also do it by hand if you don't have these fancy machines, like me!

Attaching the Parts

  • Tape the stencil to the wall where you want to place the clock, ensuring it is positioned correctly.
  • Attach the 3D-printed parts to the wall according to the stencil layout.
  • Ensure each part is securely fixed using double-sided tape.

Important Note- Insert the 1.5v AA battery inside the clock module and check it properly, before pasting it to the wall.

Finalizing the Clock

Carefully remove the stencil, ensuring all parts remain in place. Check that all parts are securely attached and aligned properly.

Tip- You can also remove the hands of the clock before removing the stencil and attach them later, to make the installation easy.

Conclusion
