3D Printed Powerful Water Pump That Is Portable
Hello readers in this instructables i will show you how i made this small yet powerful 3d printed water pump at your home in a very easy way.
To begin with let me explain you the reason behind making this project, Since i was very young i used to look at the dc motors and every time when i see them only one thing pops up in my mind.
Woow! This is one of the best inventions mankind has ever made let it be a rocket or one of the complex and small gadget dc motors are present in some way.
The uses of dc motors are infinite i would say! In my case i wanted to build something out of this electronics and i had a small garden where the electricity access is limited.
I had a 3d printer and searched for few efficient designs online and came up with this design, I am using 775 MOTOR commonly known as drill motor known for its powerful torque and great rpm consuming about 6 to 12v of dc power.
From the images above you might already know how much is the size of this thing and also how powerful it is.
I just wanted to make a water pump that runs on batteries and also would fit in any pocket so that we are eliminating lots of wires as well as lot of additional accessories that you will need to pump out water.
Almost all the essential parts used in this project(except the motor) is 3d printed so you don't have to worry if you are building this project.
Feel free to ask any questions and also I have given a detailed video tutorial in the end don't miss to check it out.
Supplies
Do not stress out! We need only simple materials to build this pump and below are these
DC motor(775 drill motor)
Screws for motor
Sheet of plastic
3d printed parts
Super glue
3d printer
PLA filament
Hot Glue
18650 battery and 3 cell holder
DC motor speed controller(optional)
Switch
Slicing software on a computer
Water and a small bucket
Screw driver
Design and 3d Printing
This is the most important part of this project! I would like to say if your 3d printer is calibrated well you can expect one of the best results.
I have given the source for the designs for this pump and you can find the stl for the models below
There are 3 parts in total and i have named them as main frame - that goes with the dc motor and holds the other components.
The second is the impeller and this will help the motor achieve water flow within and outside
Last one is the side lid that will help the water to contain while the motor is running
For all the 3 parts except the impeller there is no need of rafts or supports at the time of printing since you can avoid extra print time by placing the model like shown in the images above.
Follow the settings that i used at the time of slicing given in the images above.
The choice of color is left to you! it will not take up much time to print these models and after you print all of them we can head over to assembling them and before we have to make it water sealed and let us see how that is done.
I would like to thank the designer of this pump who motivated me to do this project
Assembling
There is a difference in material between the case of motor and the front part of motor, This area is subjected to water leakage.
To insulate the water leaking when the motor is running at high speeds transferring the liquids you can use either plastic or rubber.
I scavanged for rubber in my house but did not find any luck so i had to switch to plastic, I marked the size of a circle on the plastic considering the size of front part from dc motor.
There is a simple trick to make the hole at the center of the circle, just fold the circle and with the help of scissors trim off the top part.
Place this sheet first( 2 layers) then upon this place the casing/body and now with the help of screws join this 2 components.
Now connect the impeller to the motor shaft, you can do this by simply inserting the impeller and pressing the impeller inside.
At this point we have covered the insulating part(first half) now we can proceed with the rest half.
Testing(midway Progress)
After the impeller is added test the working of this inside the case by connecting to battery, You need a 6v to 12v dc source to run this pump.
There are many ways to make a battery pack but i will use the most simple one. Take 18560 batteries and insert into a 3d cell holder and you are good to go.
Whenever the charge is less you can remove from the holder and charge the batteries, I have also added a switch as you can see in the circuit diagram.
Test if the impeller is making any noise, if it is making just check if any parts are touching each other but this happens in very rare cases.
Now add the outside lid and use superglue to seal the layers, after the superglue is dry completely dry add one layer of hot glue to make the casing air sealed.
This is necessary since when the motor is working there should not be any air leakage inside the casing that will effect the performance of the water outlet.
How to Use Water Pump
Using this is not a big deal! It is just a plug and play type of device and all you need is a battery pack of 12v and water in a bucket.
The biggest advantage of such water pump is that there is no need of priming, You can simply place the pump inlet on the water source and power it on and immediately the water starts to come out.
To extend the supply of water you can also use hose, i didn't find any need to use them so i have used directly.
I will simply use the 12v power source from the battery, if you want to control the speed of motor you can also use dc motor speed controller.
I will recommend not to use any controller instead directly use the power from 3x18650 batteries.
To test the water pump i filed a small container with full of water and to the inlet i have dipped the water and turned on the motor and now you can see the water pumping outside.
You can use this water pump to supply water to small gardens where you have challenges with electricity.
This was all about building this 3d printed water pump, if you have any questions ask me in the discussion box.
Build and Working Video
Most exciting part of this project lies in the testing where you get a chance to see the working of your homemade creation.
Not to say definitely you will be amazed by looking at the working of this water pump, i was able to finish the water on my container in no time.
You can also add a small hose to transfer the water within short distances.
That was all about building this water pump, let me know if you have any such useful ideas that can be made at home using 3d printer and some electronics.
Give a try building this project, Thank you and happy making.
