3D Printed - Powerful LED POI

IMG_20160604_201021.jpg

Glow sticking, LED POI manipulation, fire juggling and human pyrotechnic, have all been a great fun part of my life.

The only issue i had during all theses years was not finding powerful enough LED POI that could get that WOW reaction from the crowd just by turning them on.

This accomplishment could only be using fire POI or pyrotechnic materials. For that reason i have always been on the look for very power-full LED POI.

The search is over, thanks to 3D printing, i could finally design my own LED POI, or better, my SUPER BRIGHT BLINDING LED POI :) have a look at the video.

A Bit About Poi Spinning

Poi refers to both a style of performing art and the equipment used for engaging in poi performance. wikipedia

Poi performing is a great way to express your creativity, exercise your brain and body in infinite loops of tangles and untangles of movement.

List of Materials and Tools

Materials to build a pair pair led poi:

- 6 units Turnigy nano tech round cell lipo batteries 1200mAh 15C discharge

- 1 or 2 3 cell lipo batteries charger 1200mAh 1s / 3.7V Discharge: 15C Weight: 23g Dimensions: 58mm x 15mm

- 6 units High Quality 5W COB(Chips on Board) 60 LED car

- 2 swivels

- 2 handles

- 2 meters rope

- 250gr of 3D filament

- Strong Silicone

Tools and machines:

The LiPo Batteries

The batteries used inside each POI are 3 lipo cells that have 1200mAh 3.7V each, they are connected in series to make 11.1V so they should give almost 1h spinning time :)

THE 5W 12V COB LED

IMG_20160603_003827.jpg

When i first saw the bright lights form these 12V 5W COB led bars i knew i had found some powerful LED's for LED POI. These bars are 20cm long and have 6mm width. Each Poi will be powered by 3 units. So you will need 6 in total.

There are 2 3D printed parts, the poi body and the cover. PLA was used for this first prototype, i will try flexible filament on the next version. You need to print 2 units. You will need a 20x20 print base in order to 3D print these parts.

The cover part is used to attach the switch button and also locks the batteries in place. Print 2 units of the cover.

Wiring Up the Electronics

The electronics wiring is very simple:

Solder 3 cell lipo in series

Solder the lever switch to the batteries and to the 3 units of COB LED's.

This setup allows you to charge your unit once the battery runs out.

Ropes and Swivel

Choose your favorite rope and swivel to attach to each poi. I used a nice par of swivels i got from www.homeofpoi.com

This fist prototype worked out just fine, very powerful light and nice overall weight, that can be used for 15 to 30 minute session without too much strain on your arms.

Possible upgrades, blink circuit, flexible filament, decrees weight.
