3D Printed Coat Hangers

In this instructable, we are going to share with you The 3D Printed Coat hanger.

So first of all we are BONEVET. We're the first maker-space in the Balkans! Our maker-space has lots of spaces that are made specially for technology and creation. One of main ones, is the Mechanics room, or as we call it: "Laura Mersini Houghton" Room.
There we do all sorts of projects, using lots of equipment. While working, we always put our coats on, glasses, and everything. Just to be sure. This is why we needed some hangers, to let our coats. For making this, we decided that the most easy, fun and cool method was using some of our machines. So we did it through the 3D Printer, and our CNC Machine.

So I'm Rrezon Koshi , one of the annual members here in BONEVET. I'm 12 years old. After seeing that we needed some hangers for our Mechanics room , I decided to make some. Using the machines here in BONEVET it was a lot easier. Also I got help from the staff here , and the older annual members. Here in BONEVET I get the chance to do all sorts of stuff , starting from Arts & Crafts , to High Level Electronics. After doing projects in BONEVET i learn a lot more about certtain stuff. From BONEVET I learned a lot of new things. I learned how to use a 3D Printer , how to 3D Design , and I got a lot more creative.

This project turned out to be really cool and of course you can change it, upgrade it, costumize it , just to make it better ☺

Supplement and Materials

3.jpg

1. A piece of wood (Dimensions 51 cm x 18 cm x 1.6 cm thick)

2.Filament ( You can choose how many colors)

3. 2.0 cm screws (8 pcs)

4. Some longer screws ( used for drilling the wood piece to the wall , you can choose how long you want them )

5. A drill

6. A Utility knife

7. A ruler / Tape Measure

Machines that you need to use :

1. A 3D Printer

2. A Laser Cutter

3.A CNC machine

We used the Laser Cutter to engrave our name on the wood piece , and the CNC Machine for the holes , so you can use other simple supplements , to make the holes , and for the decoration you can use other things , just free your imagination ☺

Making/Finding the Design of the Hangers

4.jpg
5.jpg

The first step of this project is to make/find the design of the coat hangers.
We got the design from Thingiverse from the user Soren_Furbo and edited it. You should make the size that you need and suits you. What's fun for it, is that you can make different shapes that you like, different colors (for example we used different colors and it looked pretty nice at the end).

The design can be made with different applications like Blender, Sketchup etc. And after you make the design you upload it to Cura (if you are using a Ultimaker 3D Printer) or any other application (if you are using another type of 3D Printer). In Cura you can "upgrade" the design. You can change the size, the filling inside and so on. We needed 8 hangers, but it's always the best if you make another one in case that one of the hangers breaks. So we made 9 . Below you may find the design file that we used, so you may use it too :

Finding the Wood Piece That You Like and Suits You, and Preparing It for the Hangers

6.jpg

The next step is to find/buy a wood piece that, suits you and has the dimensions that you need.

We used a wood piece with the dimensions 51 cm x 18 cm x 1.6 cm thick. Now the next thing was to prepare it for the hangers. In the beginning we thought using glue to stick the hangers, but we knew it wouldn't work, because the hangers would break or fall of. So using a CNC Machine we checked the dimensions we needed and made the holes for the hangers. Since we made 8 3D Printed hangers, we made 8 holes for them to get in. After checking the dimensions and calculating the distance of the hangers, we made the design and then uploaded it to the CNC Machine. We made some tests on other pieces of wood to check if the hangers will fit, and after the perfect match, we turned on the CNC and it did the other part of the job ...

After the CNC made all the 8 holes, we putted the hangers in them.

Below you may find the attached file of CNC Design, you can use if you also use the same size of the wood.

Drilling Through the Wood and to the Hangers

7.jpg

After we putted the hangers into their places by the color, we decided to drill through the wood and to the hangers, to make them more stable .We made some holes for the screws, and then started drilling . While drilling you should be careful, because if you put to much weight over the hangers, they can break.

You should take the screws that suit you, judging by the thickness of the wood. Since our wood piece was 1.6 cm thick we chosed that the screws that would fit perfectly were 2.0 cm tall. It can be a problem drilling through the hangers, because the plastic from the filament can break. One of our hangers broke, so we used another one that we made earlier, so it's always the best if you make one or two others in case one of them breaks.

Adding Other Parts or Decorations, to Make the Coat Hanger Look Better

8.jpg

Using the Laser Cut we engraved our maker-space name on the wood and it looked quite better. So , it's your choice if you want to change the Coat Hanger by adding other elements . So all you need for this part is some good imagination and creativity and at the end the project will look perfect.

Drilling-sticking the Project to the Wall

9.jpg

So the project is done... All you need to do now is to drill the wood piece to the wall. For us it was a small problem because the wall where we wanted the Coat hanger to be was a drywall. So after thinking it over carefully we found the solution and then drilled the Coat Hanger to the wall. Since it was a nice pattern and it had different colors, the Hanger looked very cool and it was functional.

Hope you liked this project and we hope you made it, and of course it worked ☻
