3.5 Disckette Into Gift Notepad

IMG_3424.JPG

Hi everyone!

This Instructable born with 2 ideas on my mind.

  1. to reuse some old items, as a bunch of 3.5" disckettes.
  2. to give an original gift to my work partners (I work as a Technical Support Engineer) and to some friends who I believe, would appreciate the irony, on saving notes, in a storage device.

Hope you guys like it!

Materials and Tools

As you can see, i'm reusing old items, and you only need a few tools wich can find around your house.

Materials:

  • Old 3.5" disckettes.
  • A letter size notebook
  • Cold glue

Tools:

  • Scisors
  • Dremmel or drill
  • Utility knife
  • Cutting Pliers

Preparing the Notepad Sheets

First, use cutting pliers to cut the folded tip of the spiral binding and remove it.

To make the notepad sheets, lets cut the paper in half, using a utility knife, or a paper cutter if you have one.
Cut the paper, until you have a square sheet of 8.5 cm for side. If you are using a letter size notebook, you end with 3 mini-notepads.
Also, cause the thick of the disckete, y suggest to make notepads of 80 pages top.

Preparing the Disckette Covers

Now, we'll use the notebook cover, as a template for the spiral holes.
I put some masking tape on the side on the black disckettes for contrast.

Then, place the cover over the disckette, and proceed to mark the holes with a pen or marker.

Now, we need a drill or a dremmel with a small tip to drill the holes on the disckette.

Building the Notepad

Now that we have the disckette with the holes drilled, lets open it, using the utility knife.

  • 1st remove the Media Cover by just open the sides. We need this piece in half and well glue it later to éach cover.
  • 2nd, insert the utility knife inside the disckette, and carefully, cut all the way around.

Now, you'll end with 4 pieces:

  • Front Cover
  • Back Cover
  • Media Cover (2 parts)
  • Black Disk

To keep the original look, as much as possible, i paste the black disk, inside the back cover but this isn't necessary.
Then I lay the back cover, then the notpad sheets and the top cover, and proceed to add the spiral binding to keep everything together.

And, the project is over!
Just simply bend the tips of the spiral, with some electrical pliers, to prevent someone to get hurt.
I'll put them inside a cello bag to make it look great and give them away.
As you can see, this is a simple project, to reuse some old items and to give an original gift to someone.
