3018 CNC Machine Upgrade to 5050 CNC Machine
Want to Upgrade 3018/1610 CNC Machine to 5050 CNC Machine!! Here You Will Get All Instructions.
As I was a beginner in CNC Machine I chose to buy a cheap 1610 CNC Machine so that I can learn and do my experiment on it. I always prefer to buy a small version of the machine then go for on professional machines or if possible to upgrade the same machine.
Why you should upgrade it? Because it is the cheapest option instead of buying a Large Machine (Applicable on Beginner only). After learning a year I chose to upgrade it to a 5050 CNC Machine. I also add an E-Stop button, dust collector, End stop Switch and Laser Module. For 5050 CNC Machine working Area is 440mm X 260mm X 40mm. Only X-axis and Y-axis are upgraded and the Z-axis height remains the same.
Why I chose the 5050 dimension for CNC Machine because 500mm length is best for this type of configuration of the axis. After the 500mm length of the rods of the CNC Machine can't handle the weight of the bed on Y-axis and tends to bend down.
Can I Increase more length of the Machine? Yes, you can but you have to change the configuration of motion of the Y-axis; in which the bed is steady and the whole upper body (include the X-axis, Z-axis and spindle) of the CNC Machine move on the frame of the CNC Body. Which it will make more complex to upgrade for the beginner.
All Designing and Animation is done in Fusion360.
Material Required
I have to Provide the List of Materials in Photo and PDF, so-referred it.
Disassemble Your Old CNC Machine
Disassemble everything. Except Z-axis Module
Thing you don't want from old machine are:
1) Aluminum profiles.
2) Rods.
Replace All T8 2-start* Anti-backlash Spring Loaded Nut With T8 4-start* Anti-backlash Spring Loaded Nut
Note: Replace T8 nut for X-axis and Y-axis only. [Do not do with Z-axis].
Replace all [T8 2-start*] Anti-backlash Spring Loaded Nut with [T8 4-start*] Anti-backlash Spring Loaded Nut.
Base Assembly
Step 1: Refer to the design PDF that I have provided. It will guide you for measurements and distances of aluminum profiles.
Step 2: Assemble it as you have done previously for the 3018 CNC Machine. Here I attach the pdf of 3018 CNC assembly instruction that would help you out. (also refer to the 5050 CNC Machine pdf).
Bed Plate Assembly
Step 1: Refer to the Design PDF for Hole Measurement on MDF wood.
Step 2: Refer to the Design PDF for assembly of the Bed Plate.
Step 3: Refer to the design PDF that I have provided. It will guide you for measurements and distance.
Step 4: Screw them with Nut and Bolt.
Note: I have used two MDF sheets the Bottom MDF is attached to Aluminum Plate and Top most MDF is not fixed, it just resting on it.
Now Fixed the Bed Plate on CNC Machine
X-axis and Spindle Module Assembly
Step 1: Refer to the design PDF that I have provided. It will guide you for measurements and distance.
Step 2: Assemble it as you have done previously for the 3018 CNC Machine. Here I attach the pdf of 3018 CNC assembly instruction that would help you out. (also refer to the 5050 CNC Machine pdf).
Note: You have to adjust the height of the X-axis and Spindle Module according to Top height of the Bed Plate.
Complete All Wire Harness of CNC Machine
Changes in E-steps in Machine Software
Note: This is an important step.
I have to change the threaded rod from 2-start to 4-start of X-axis and Y-axis. So there will be a change in Machine code. Change the E-steps for X-axis and Y-axis in Machine Code.
Write this command in the terminal box of the Software which you are using and make sure that while doing this your CNC machine is connected to the Computer(Software).
$100 = 400.000 (X-axis travel resolution, step/mm)
$101 = 400.000 (Y-axis travel resolution, step/mm)
$102 = 800.000 (Z-axis travel resolution, step/mm)
Test All Axis and Spindle
3D Printed Parts (optional)
1) Here I provided a V-slot cover STL File for Aluminum Profile so that dust do not get collected in Profile slots.
2) Plate Holder for Top MDF wood. 3) For Dust shoe STL File, Go on the Thingiverse website and search for '3018 Dust Shoe' and also for 'Upgrade of 3018' for the manual handle for rotation of the axis.
Optional Upgrades for CNC Machine
1) Emergence Stop Button.
2) Controller Box.
3) Bluetooth.
4) Laser Module.
5) CNC Bits Holder. (STL file on my MyMiniFactory, link in bio)
6) End Stop Switch.
7) ESP32 Cam.
