Popcorn on a Cob

Do you love popcorn but don't love all of the mess that goes along with it? Me too. First, you have to try to find the bits of the popcorn maker you got as a wedding gift that lives somewhere at the back of the deepest kitchen cabinet (you know, the one that you haven't seen since sometime before last Christmas), then you have to try to remember how much popcorn to put in said machine lest you get peppered with red-hot popcorn kernel shrapnel if you overfill it (and let me tell you, those little suckers hurt!)…sometimes it just seems not worth the effort.

I'm Jeff Potter, author of Cooking for Geeks, and lucky for you, I know an unconventional little shortcut to making popcorn that takes literally three minutes. This will be the easiest popcorn of your life. No safety goggles or kevlar vest required.

Gather Your Ingredient(s)

Here's what you'll need in order to make the easiest popcorn of your life.

Ingredients

Popcorn

Okay, okay…I know, that seems obvious, right? But actually, pay close attention to what kind of popcorn you are buying. You want actual popcorn still on the cob, so the kernels will be hard and dry. This is not the same as the kind of corn on the cob that you eat…those kernels will still be moist and succulent.

popcorn on the cob = dry kernels = good / not popcorn on the cob = moist, juicy kernels = no

Place Cob in the Microwave

Now that we've determined without a shadow of a doubt what kind of popcorn to use, simply put the cob in the microwave, unadorned. No butter, no salt…nothing. Naked. Au Naturel.

Microwave on high for 3 minutes.

*note*

It's probably smart to put your popcorn cob in a bowl. You can see here that I did not, and you can see the mess that ensued. Save yourself some cleanup and use a bowl. Trust me on this one.

Add the Flavoring of Your Choice and Eat!

Once your three minutes are up, your popcorn should be ready to eat. One cob of corn should make approximately one medium bowl of popcorn. Just add salt, butter, spice, or whatever your heart desires!
