2020 Dumpster Fire Ornament

IMG_3657.jpeg

Commemorate this year with your very own 2020 Dumpster Fire Ornament.

Supplies

Scissors

Pattern

Felt (red, yellow, orange, blue, black, white)

Embroidery floss (red, yellow, orange, blue ,black, white)*

1/8 inch Ribbon**

* your embroidery floss should match your felt color. The ornament will still look great if you only use one color.

**feel free to use a string, thin ribbon, or braided embroidery floss to create the hang for your ornament.

Print Pattern and Cut Felt

  1. Print the paper pattern (make sure the square template in the left corner is 1 inch by 1 inch)
  2. Cut the pieces of the paper patter and use those pieces as a template for your felt.

The key at the bottom of the pattern will tell you have many pieces to cut out of each color.

Lay Out Design

Lay out your pieces to make sure you have everything.

  • 1 red large fire
  • 1 orange medium fire
  • 1 yellow small fire
  • 1 blue large rectangle
  • 1 blue long skinny rectangle
  • 2 blue small rectangles
  • 2 blue small trapezoids
  • 2 white "2"s
  • 2 white "0"s
  • 2 brown backing outlines

Add the Flames

Stack the yellow, orange, and red flames on top of each other. Using a whip stitch or straight stitch, sew all the flames to one of the brown backing pieces (I used the whip stitch in this example).

I suggest using coordinating embroidery floss. I did not use coordinating embroidery floss in the tutorial and I think it still looks great.

Add the Dumpster and Numbers

For this step, you will be adding the dumpster and the numbers to the ornament.

The layering in this step is important because it will give your ornament more depth and interest.

Layer in this order:*

  1. Place the two handles (2 blue small trapezoids) and the two feet (2 blue small squares) of the dumpster first.
  2. Add the large rectangle for the dumpster onto of the elements placed in step 1. Bump up the top of this rectangle to the bottom of the flames.
  3. Stitch items placed in step 2 and 3 to the backing piece.
  4. The long and skinny rectangle will be used to hide the seam between the flames and the large dumpster rectangle placed in step 2 and stitch
  5. Place numbers and sticth.

* If you have trouble keeping the pieces in place, use a little glue or a small stitch to prevent elements from shifting.

Add the Second Backing

Congratulations, the front of the ornament is complete!

Now, it is time to add the second backing to your ornament to hide all those ugly threads.

  1. Cut about a 6 inch piece of ribbon and sandwich it between the two backing pieces.
  2. Stitch the ribbon between the two layers, paying close attention to make sure the ribbon is secure.
  3. Use a blanket stitch to attach the two pieces backing pieces together.

Add It to the Tree
