20 Inch Studded Fat Tires - RadRunner Rad Power Bikes
I live in Canada and the roads are snowy and icy for about half the year.
I was looking for 20 inch studded fat tires for my RadRunner E-bike but I could not find them.
I then decided to make my own using 16 inch motorcycle tires.
Motorcycle and Bicycles use different wheel diameter references so that a 16 inch motorcycle tire is the same diameter as a 20 inch bicycle tire.
This way, you can use motorcycle tires and stud them for winter use. They fit a 20 inch fat tire bicycle rim (the original rims fit tires between 20 x 3.0 - 20 x 4.0 ) perfectly.
I did not need any special tool for the installation.
Studding the Tires and Installing Them
I proceeded as following:
- Marked the location of the studs on the tire with a silver marker (you can get a cheap one at the dollar store). I choose different stud patterns for front and back tire (installing more on the front and less on the back tire);
- Installed the studs using an electric drill and the stud installation tool provided by iGrip. There was no need to pre-drill the holes. The studs can be screwed directly into the rubber. The rubber is thick enough and the studs do not cause any damage to the tire while being installed;
- Removed the "regular" tires from the bicycle;
- Installed the studded tires on the bicycle. The studded tires are more stiff and heavier that the bicycle tires but I was able to install them without specialized tools. I only use my regular bicycle tools (just regular tire levers) for removing tires. I just had to use a bit more force during the installation but nothing crazy. I kept the same tire tubes of the original tires;
