2 Ingredient Dog Pill Dough
As a natural homemade dog treat company we often give recipes like this one to our customers. It can be difficult to give a dog a pill, but it becomes super easy when you hide it in a healthy treat! We created the Pill Dough recipe as a wheat, corn, dairy & soy free alternative to "pockets" you can find on mass retailer shelves. The dough allows you to choose how much is needed to cover the pill, so it is perfect for capsules or tablets. This simple and inexpensive 2 ingredient recipe makes enough dough to cover 14 to 20 pills (depends on how big the pill is and how much dough you choose to use). Our dog, Tank, loves them and we hope this Instructable will help other pet parents!
Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients to make the dough:
- 2 1/2 cups oat flour
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (liquid)
Gather these items to use for mixing and storage:
- Small mixing bowl
- Spoon
- Wax paper or cutting board
- Plastic wrap
- Microwave-safe container with lid
Mix
In a small mixing bowl, pour the melted 1/2 cup of coconut oil into the 2 1/2 cups of oat flour.
Mix with a spoon until it clumps together.
Knead
Dump the mixed dough onto a non stick surface, such as wax paper or a cutting board.
Knead the dough a few times until all the flour has been worked in.
If the dough sticks easily to fingers (like the consistency of cookie dough), then add oat flour by the handful. And knead again to work in the flour. Repeat, if necessary, until the mixture is dough-like and does not easily stick to fingers.
*We have found that most dogs love the taste of oats and don't need any added flavor. In case your dog is the exception...this is where you can add a spoonful of natural peanut butter. But then it becomes 3 Ingredient Dog Pill Dough :-)
Storage
Wrap the ball of dough in plastic wrap. This step is not necessary, but it is recommended! The plastic wrap seals out more air and moisture so it will stay fresh for a longer period of time.
Place the wrapped ball of dough in a microwave-safe container with a lid.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. Without the use of preservatives the shelf life can vary due to fridge temp, moisture levels, air tightness of container, etc.
Use
1. Take container out of fridge and microwave on high for 10 second intervals until the dough is moldable.
2. Pinch off the desired amount.
3. Cover the pill with the dough.
4. Give to your dog just like a treat!
Tah-dah! A simple, affordable, & healthy way to have your dog enjoy medicine time with a yummy treat.
