Here I am describing the oil change process on a 1998 4runner from start to finish in your own driveway.

Supplies

5.5 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil

New oil filter (OEM or equivalent)

Socket wrench with a 14mm socket

Oil filter wrench (if needed)

Jack and jack stands

Drain pan (to collect used oil)

Funnel

Shop rags or paper towels

Torque wrench (recommended for drain plug)

1. Warm Up the Engine

Start the 4Runner and let it run for about 10 minutes to warm the oil. This helps the oil flow more freely when draining. Turn off the engine before proceeding.

2. Open the Hood & Remove Oil Fill Cap

  1. Open the hood and locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  2. Remove the cap to allow air in, which helps oil drain more smoothly.
  3. Tip: Pull up the dipstick out about half way as a reminder that the engine has no oil during the process.

3. Lift the Vehicle & Secure with Jack Stands

  1. Use a floor jack to raise the vehicle high enough to work comfortably underneath.
  2. Securely place jack stands under the frame rails to ensure safety.
  3. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack!
  4. Be sure to chock/block the rear wheels of the vehicle

4. Locate & Remove the Drain Plug & Oil Filter

  1. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the engine oil pan.
  2. Using a 14mm socket wrench, loosen and remove the oil drain plug and let the oil flow into the drain pan.
  3. Allow several minutes for complete drainage.
  4. Locate the oil filter (driver’s side, near the front of the engine). Loosen it and let remaining oil drain before fully removing it.

5. Prepare & Install the New Oil Filter

  1. Check to make sure the old oil filter gasket did not stick to the engine.
  2. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter for a proper seal.
  3. Hand-tighten the new oil filter onto the engine (do not overtighten).
  4. Reinstall the drain plug with a new drain plug gasket and torque it to 25 lb-ft using a torque wrench.
  5. Wipe off any spilled oil on the oil pan or surrounding area.

6. Add New Oil to the Engine

  1. Using a funnel, pour 5.5 quarts of 5W-30 oil into the oil fill port.
  2. Reinstall the oil filler cap securely.

7. Start the Engine & Circulate the Oil

  1. Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
  2. Check under the vehicle for any leaks near the drain plug and oil filter.

8. Check the Oil Level

  1. Turn off the engine and let it sit for 1 minute to allow oil to settle.
  2. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then reinsert and remove again to check the oil level.
  3. The oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
  4. If needed, add more oil and repeat the process.
  5. Reinsert dipstick completely when finished

9. Lower the Vehicle & Final Checks

  1. Remove the jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  2. Close the hood and wipe down any oil residue.

10. Record Mileage & Dispose of Oil Properly

  1. Take note of your mileage so you can track when the next oil change is due.
  2. Dispose of the used oil and filter at a local auto parts store or recycling center.
