Room 109 was originally a computer engineering room for making robotics and other such mechanisms. Recently, the engineering and cosmetics/barber classes had to switch rooms, which meant 109 had to be redesigned to fit the cosmetics/barber class. After a week of removing and adding furniture, buying supplies and repainting the room, I was able to redesign 109 to fit the needs of the class.

On Monday, I spent most of my time taking measurements of the actual room with a couple of other people. We would measure in inches the desks, smart board and overall length, width and height of the room. We kept track of what we did before we had to model the room. Tuesday was when my group had to model the classroom on Tinkercad. We had to decrease the size to something that would fit the workboard before we could decorate the room. I tried my best to replicate the class as much as possible, from the columns on the walls to the size and colour of the smart board. On Wednesday I finished up with the chairs and computers before getting into the redesign.

Thursday was when I began to change the room up the most. I noticed that the original class and other barber places have hair washing stations. They're full of shampoos and conditioners, some even for different types of hairs. They also have towels so, when the barber is washing the customer's hair, they can cover the shoulders and neck not to stain their clothes. I decided to add a total of 6 Hair Washing chairs since, in most of the references I took, there wasn't a lot of them in those barber shops. I used the office chair model and connected a bowl and stand on the back of it. I moved the gray self from the corner of the room to the station to store the shampoos and conditioners including the six towels on top, which I added on Friday. Finally, I chose a handheld shower head as the thing to clean the hair because it can wash off any soapy area without moving the person's head, making it more comfortable for them and the barber.

I then modelled the desks with shelves and necessary equipment on Thursday. I added the additional details such as the broom, dustpan and the hanging bundles of Hair Cutting Cape on Friday. When looking at other salons, I noticed some of the places had shelves to store their tools and perfumes/colognes, while some just laid them out on the table. I decided to add shelves for desks so the students of the class can keep an organized environment with the styling tools. The styling tools include:

  • Shaving machine
  • Blade Clippers pack (3mm, 4.5mm, 6mm, 9mm and 25mm)
  • Thin Blue brush
  • Wide Red brush
  • Scissors
  • Perfumes
  • Hair Gels/Mold Creams (Below the perfume shelf)
  • Straightener
  • Curling Iron
  • HairDryer
  • Hairpin

I also noticed that in some of the references that most of the salons would have a lot of strong light sources around the styling stations, whether that would be around the mirror or in the surroundings. This is why I added lights to the mirror, so the students can have a clearer view of the person they're styling. Lastly, I also added the chairs seen at hair salons, to keep with the barber theme of the class.

Thursday, I modelled the cosmetics area with each of the following tools:

  • 4 Eyeshadow packs with multiple colours/shades
  • Different-sized makeup brushes with a holder
  • Concealer
  • Different Lipstick shades/colours
  • Different Lipgloss shades/colours
  • Different Mascara shades/colours
  • Wipes (Added on Friday)
  • Napkins

I chose to lay them out on the table, as I noticed while looking through a couple of references, they're usually done in that sort of fashion. When they're begin used, they are presented out onto the table, when they're not, they're covered with the tools' lids and put into the table's drawers. I also added lights to this mirror as well because, as I noticed in the original class and the references, they have similar lighting conditions as in the barber salons. I also decided to add mannequin heads for both cosmetic and barber purposes. I noticed while taking pictures of the classroom that the heads' hair (long and short) would be used for practice for the barber class and the heads' faces would be used for the cosmetics class, which is why I added them.

I changed the colour of the floor and walls to that of light and dark lavender colours. I did this to give the room a unique touch that pops without being too overbearing. I kept the green phone board, as I feel as though purple and light green can easily contrast with each other. I decided to shorten the teacher's desk while keeping the drawers, as to give the teacher enough room to store things and keep their space organized without getting in the way of the smart board. I also did this because the teacher doesn't need a high-end computer, as they'll mostly be doing hands-on work in class with the students. Finally, I didn't have a specific reason for the placement of the recycling bin, however, for the garbage bin, I placed it between the styling and makeup section a reason. Both sections have something constantly being disposed of. Cosmetics have napkins and wipes and the barber section has to usually deal with the leftover trimmed hair. So putting the garbage bin close to both sections won't be a hassle for them to remove waste. I hope this helped in explaining the process and reasoning behind the redesign of Room 109.
