100% DIY Composter - 100% Recycled Wood
Branches of a fir tree + pallets + old wood from a staircase.
- I already had the screws and nails.
- The stakes are stuck in the ground with a sledgehammer.
- Everything is cut with a circular saw or chainsaw.
- There are two bins. One for kitchen and garden waste, the other for dry toilets.
- There are two lids on the top to feed the beast and two hatches in front to collect the compost.
- I did not draw a plan, everything was done as I went along. (This is the way)
- Each bin is approximately one cubic meter.
I hope it's clear, I'm French...
Supplies
- recycled wood (what you have)
- lots of screws and nails
- hinges x8
- slide latch lock x2
- sledgehammer
- nail puller hammer
- circular saw
- chain saw
- spirit level and square
- electric screwdriver
- crowbar (for pallets)
Place the Stakes
Place the stakes (branches) with a sledgehammer. (1,2,3,4,5)
No need to measure, you will cut them later.
The Lower Part
Place the branches on the lower part (6) and put a board in front at the same level. (7)
Optionally you can also put reinforcement boards on the sides like I did. (between 1 and 2 and between 4 and 5)
Reinforce the Frame
Place a second board (8) at the maximum desired height and reinforce the frame. (green parts)
Fill the Frame
Fill the frame with planks (orange), leaving a space for air to pass through.
Cut the Stakes
Put planks on the sides and back (green). Cut the stakes with a chainsaw. You can cut higher at the back to create a slope.
Separate the Two Bins
Separate the two bins in the middle with a pallet or boards.
Make the Lids
make the lids with pallets and secure the hinges. Add planks to fill.
Bottom Frame
Make the bottom frame (9,10). Measure and make the low hatches (11,12). Secure the hinges and latches.
Block the Lids
add a board at the back to block the lids and keep them open if necessary.
